It has been requested that we make support for the i8042 keyboard and mouse controller modular. Some people get weird error messages because they don't have one and the manual probing slows down their boot. Tom took care of this on the kernel side (thank you) and the result finally landed in 3.13. In order to get keyboard input during early init, if you don't have it already, add the keyboard hook to the HOOKS= line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and run mkinitcpio -P. It has been in the default configuration for some time. WARNING: There's a downside to all this: On some motherboards (mostly ancient ones, but also a few new ones), the i8042 controller cannot be automatically detected.

Which Linux distro is best? Survey says: Slackware One of the biggest ongoing challenges for Linux advocates has always been that there is such a paucity of data available to demonstrate the preferences of the people who are actually using the free and open source operating system. That's especially true on the desktop, where virtually countless different flavors are available as a free download for every taste and purpose, but for which there's really no way to take an accurate count, since typically they don't ever get associated with any sales statistics. DistroWatch's page-hit rankings are often used as a stand-in for such data in the absence of anything better, but every once in a while someone takes a survey that provides fresh insight. Case in point?

A Guide to Installing Arch in VirtualBox Author’s Note (12/26/2012): This post has been updated to take advantage of some of the excellent corrections and constructive criticism provided by the Arch Linux community on Reddit. Many thanks to them for their advice and suggestions. Author’s Note (3/21/2013): I’m thankful for all the nice things users have said about this guide and all the advice they’ve given in the comments—you folks are great. There’ve been a number of calls to update this post to reflect recent changes in Arch. I’ve added a few updates throughout the text and will probably continue to do so once or twice a year until it becomes unwieldy.

Linux distribution - Wikipedia A Linux distribution (often called distro for short) is an operating system built on top of the Linux kernel and often around a package management system. Linux distributions are usually targeted at common hardware like personal computers, but are available for a wide variety of systems up to the most powerful supercomputers (for example, Rocks Cluster Distribution distribution), or down to small embedded systems (for example, OpenWrt distribution). Most distributions come ready to use and pre-compiled for a specific instruction set, while others (such as Gentoo) are distributed in source code form and compiled locally during installation. Linux distributions are primarily based on free and open-source software, at least partially; that part includes the Linux kernel and usually a very large collection of software of all sorts. how-to geek - linux The vim text editor, a standard tool included on Linux and macOS, can quickly encrypt text files with a password. It’s faster and more convenient than encrypting a text file with a separate utility. Here’s how to set it up. Plex Media Server is renowned for smooth and intuitive user experience, so you might be a bit surprised if you find yourself puzzled over exactly how to restart your server. Cyborg Design - Concept Art Production Techniques In this DVD, instructor Michael Pedro gives an overview of the techniques he uses to achieve high-quality 3D concept designs, with an emphasis on production-setting workflows. He begins by going over shape ideation in Alchemy and then develops a full page of thumbnails. Michael then proceeds into ZBrush to begin blocking in the major forms and bounces between ZBrush and Photoshop, sketching over screenshots of the in-progress sculpt. The bulk of this DVD will then focus on the development of the final design in ZBrush. He demonstrates how he makes use of insert meshes, kit-bashing, and character posing, in order to more quickly arrive at a presentable design. When completed, he imports the model into Keyshot where he applies various materials and sets up the lighting scenario.

Unified Extensible Firmware Interface Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (or UEFI for short) is a new type of firmware that was initially designed by Intel (known as EFI then) mainly for its Itanium based systems. It introduces new ways of booting an OS that is distinct from the commonly used "MBR boot code" method followed for BIOS systems. It started as Intel's EFI in versions 1.x and then a group of companies called the UEFI Forum took over its development from which it was called Unified EFI starting with version 2.0. ArchLinux Installation Guide - Vimperator This will use GPT partitions and GRUB2 on a BIOS enabled PC (see Wiki for EFI). The Installation Guide can be found at /root/install.txt.
