Risk Reduction Strategies on Facebook Sometimes, when I’m in the field, I find teens who have strategies for managing their online presence that are odd at first blush but make complete sense when you understand the context in which they operate. These teens use innovative approaches to leverage the technology to meet personal goals. Let me explain two that caught my attention this week. Mikalah uses Facebook but when she goes to log out, she deactivates her Facebook account. She knows that this doesn’t delete the account – that’s the point. She knows that when she logs back in, she’ll be able to reactivate the account and have all of her friend connections back. How to Keep iPad children safe online Has your child got an iPad from Santa? I may be an iPad teacher calling myself @iPadWells and running this blog on iPad use but I’m also a father of 2 daughters with all the normal excitement and fear that comes with that. One of my daughters soon reaches the magical double-figure age of 10 and there is talk of her maybe (insert usual “if she’s a good girl” rhetoric that usually gets ignored) having an iPad for her birthday. The thought of her sitting alone in her bedroom with access to all that the internet has to offer scares me just as much as I’m sure will the day she steps into the first boyfriend’s car. But I’m calm.

Most of the apps our kids use are truly an extension of your child’s “real world” social life. For the most part, our kids talk to people they only talk to in “real life.” With the influence of technology in our kids social lives, we can’t panic or over think every single thing, but we do need to empower each other and be aware of what our kids are doing when they are online and engaged in these apps. We teach our children how to swim so they don’t drown and the same is true for online social behaviors.

Lego Crosses The Digital Divide With licensing agreements with Hollywood’s biggest franchises, a wildly successful film series of its own, and original product lines that have spawned television and Internet tie-ins, Lego is experiencing a boom that makes its brush with bankruptcy over a decade ago seem like an alternate reality. Plus, it still lacks any real competition in the interlocking-building-toy field. The company does what it does, and it does it really well. That’s why, unlike the rest of the toy industry—or the world, for that matter—Lego isn’t tripping over itself trying to integrate accelerometers or Bluetooth or Internet of things functionality into all of its product lines to get kids’ attention. There's a lot of that at the 2015 New York Toy Fair. "You put the toy industry under one roof and you hear, ‘This is what kids want,’" says senior director of brand relations for Lego Michael McNally, referring to the tech-saturated toys.
