Facebook is seeking to replace e-mail with what it calls a “modern messaging system” that combines all the ways people send messages — including e-mail, IM and SMS — into a single interface. It’s a clear assault on Google and and its popular “social” application — Gmail. The new system, Facebook Messages, was announced Monday. It allows you to simply click on a friend’s face, type a message and hit Enter. Facebook handles the rest.

We’re here today at the St. Regis in San Francisco where Facebook is unveiling what CEO Mark Zuckerberg is calling a “modern messaging system”. Zuckerberg recalled talking to high schoolers recently and asking them how they communicate with one another. They don’t like email. “ It’s too formal ,” Zuckerberg noted. So about a year ago, Facebook set out to overhaul the system. But this isn’t just about email.
Facebook has launched what it calls the “Modern Messaging System,” a product that integrates e-mail, IM and texting in a unified inbox. Facebook took the wraps off its new messaging system at an event today in San Francisco, and like engineering VP Andrew Bosworth said in his presentation, it's basically instant messaging and presence with some e-mail functions layered on top. It all sounds great--if you already spend most of your time in Facebook. If not, it won't have much impact on your life. The basic idea is that instead of having a bunch of different identities for different forms of communication--a ten-digit cell phone number for text messages, a couple of e-mail addresses, and various instant messaging handles on different systems--you'll just have a single handle on Facebook.
