Note: While a little bit unusual for Cryptome to dabble in the authenticity racket, the "Wikileaks insiders" are likely imposters fabricated by a person or persons unknown. Jónsdóttir is correct in asking that these persons reveal identity. Cryptome: Assange should not step aside: 1 September 2010. Wikileakileaks is a typical Gawker pimp job for ST-diseased ads. [2010] Wikileaks Cash Flows In, Drips Out. The secret-spilling website WikiLeaks appears to be a frugal spender, tapping less than 5 percent of the funds received through two of its three donation methods, according to the third-party foundation that manages those contributions.

WikiLeaks has received 640,000 euros (U.S. $800,000) through PayPal or bank money transfers* since late December, and spent only 30,000 euros (U.S. $38,000) from that funding, says Hendrik Fulda, vice president of the Berlin-based Wau Holland Foundation. The money has gone to pay the travel expenses of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and spokesman Daniel Schmitt, as well as to cover the costs of computer hardware, such as servers, and leasing data lines, says Fulda.

WikiLeaks does not currently pay a salary to Assange or other volunteers from this funding, though there have been discussions about doing so in the future, Fulda adds. The details have not yet been worked out. WikiLeaks’ Assange declined to discuss the organization’s budget with Threat Level. WikiLeaks, the Sweden-based organisation that publishes anonymous leaks of secret material (most recently 90,000 documents about the War in Afghanistan) has until now, relied on donations to fund its activities.

That’s lead to outages when funds became scarce, for whatever reason. But today WikiLeaks is unleashing a potentially devastating strike against criitics which could see it become an almost unstoppable force in the world’s media. It’s joined Flattr. Flattr is another Sweden-based outfit with close links to The Pirate Bay as the the brainchild of a group of people formerly associated with The [infamous] Pirate Bay, including Peter Sunde. Flattr has a micropayments business model based on the idea of people tipping content they like, Digg or perhaps Facebook Like buttons – but this time with real money. Users can “Flattr” content by setting up a Flattr account which sets a a monthly fee — a minimum €2 — that they are willing to contribute for any kind of online content.

“Once you do stand-up, it spoils you for everything else,” he says. “You’re the director, performer, and producer.” Unlike most of his peers, however, Stanhope has designed his career around exploring that freedom, which means choosing a life on the road.

[2010] WikiLeaks says funding has been blocked after government blacklisting. Moneybookers, a British-registered internet payment company that collects WikiLeaks donations, emailed the organisation to say it had closed down its account because it had been put on an official US watchlist and on an Australian government blacklist. The apparent blacklisting came a few days after the Pentagon publicly expressed its anger at WikiLeaks and its founder, Australian citizen Julian Assange, for obtaining thousands of classified military documents about the war in Afghanistan, in one of the US army's biggest leaks of information. The documents caused a sensation when they were made available to the Guardian, the New York Times and German magazine Der Spiegel, revealing hitherto unreported civilian casualties.

WikiLeaks defied Pentagon calls to return the war logs and destroy all copies. "MasterCard is taking action to ensure that WikiLeaks can no longer accept MasterCard-branded products," a spokesman for MasterCard Worldwide said today. That further limits the revenue sources for WikiLeaks, which has seen its finances systematically attacked in the last few days, as the Swiss authorities shut down a bank account used by editor Julian Assange, and PayPal permanently restricted the account used by the group. WikiLeaks has responded with an increasing number of fund-raising requests that urge supporters to "KEEP US STRONG. " Assuming that MasterCard blocks payments, the only easy way to donate electronically would be with a Visa credit card through a Web page hosted by Iceland-based DataCell.com.

Representatives of Visa did not respond to requests for comment from CNET today.
