August 23, 2013|By Michael Holtz, Chicago Tribune reporter What a southwest suburban library had promoted as an educational forum this week on Muslim life in America quickly turned into a contentious debate about Islam.
The tone for the Thursday evening event was set while the three panelists at the Orland Park Library were still introducing themselves. In the first of many interruptions, a half-dozen audience members stood up and demanded that everyone recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Library Director Mary Weimar denied their request. She explained that it wasn't standard practice to recite the pledge at library events and requested that the attendees show more respect for the panelists. So began a tense and often heated 90-minute debate — punctuated with frequent yelling and finger-pointing from audience members — over the practice of Shariah law, the meaning of jihad and the intersection of Islamic and American culture.

National Park Service denied a biker organization’s request for a permit to ride through the nation’s capital on September 11, in honor of ”those who were killed” during the 2001 terrorist attacks, an NPS spokeswoman confirmed to TheBlaze Monday. Carol Johnson, spokeswoman for the NPS, cited logistical concerns for denying the permit.
“They (the NPS) looked at it (the permit application) and decided it would cause a severe service disruption of traffic both inside and outside the area around the mall,” said Johnson, who then jokingly added “[I] wish the bikers would leave me alone.” “The size of the event, we can’t manage,” Johnson said. “We couldn’t provide adequate park police services and park police escorts and it would require a lot of road closures so it was denied.” The National Park Service denied a permit to a biker group for a no-stop ride through Washington, D.C. on September 11. The group said on Facebook they still plan to converge on D.C., despite lacking a permit.
