Carte des sites gaulois. C’est vers 1122 que Louis VI le Gros fait construire un château fort, appelé le « Grand Châtelet », sur ce plateau de Laye alors recouvert de forêts. Louis IX, dit saint Louis, agrandit ce château féodal, par un ensemble de bâtiments et fait élever la chapelle à l’écart des autres constructions. Un mur de protection entoure le tout. Le château est incendié pendant la guerre de Cent ans, en 1346. Il faut attendre Charles V le sage pour voir les rois revenir à Saint-Germain. Ce souverain fait raser les bâtiments incendiés et reconstruire, entre 1364 et 1367, un château à l’emplacement des murs de protection de saint Louis.

The object is in embossed, openwork form and probably was used for decorating a drinking horn from the wine service deposited in the burial. The Mediterranean origin of the motif on the central strip-a row of palmettes alternating with lotus flowers-is easily recognized. However, the parts are arranged in such a manner that the lotus flowers may be interpreted in two ways-either as such, or as pairs of leaves framing the trifoliate palmette.
