I recently watched a speech on-line by Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who spoke at TEDGlobal in London in 2009 about “The Danger of a Single Story.” (please take 18 minutes to watch the inspiring talk here). Ms. Adichie spoke about how impressionable people, especially children, are when hearing a story. The invaluable lesson is that, by only hearing a fraction of the truth (whether in the media, in school, or in popular culture), we are creating damaging misrepresentations. Show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again and that is what they become. We have all experienced this, and might even be unaware of the line between what we believe to be true and what is actually authentic. She talks in detail about her home, and how she perceives it and how it is perceived outside of Nigeria. How many of us hold the same definitions and images as our story of “Africa?”
Ways to Establish a Culturally Responsive Classroom - Education Futures: Emerging Trends and Technologies in K-12. A goal of education is to help all students become respectful of the multitudes of cultures and people that they'll interact with once they exit the educational setting.
This can be a daunting task for the educator, given that the world at large is infinitely more complex and diverse than the microcosmic environment that the student inhabits. In typical educational and social settings there is a marked tendency for students to exhibit classic in-group/out-group behaviors. In general, most students are comfortable interacting with people, behaviors, and ideas that they are familiar with but react with fear and apprehension when faced with the unfamiliar. Among its other goals, culturally responsive instruction aims to educate students that differences in viewpoint and culture are to be cherished and appreciated rather than judged and feared. Materials not returned by the assigned due date will accrue fines of $0.50 per day to a maximum overdue fine of $15.00.
If the lost item is returned, the borrower will be charged only for the $15.00 overdue fine. Materials may be renewed for two week intervals, provided they have not been requested by other borrowers. To Request an Item Each kit request must be submitted separately. Requests for materials should be submitted **at least** two weeks before your intended usage date.
