Markings on her face

It is extraordinary to me how recognizable from the air are the terraces of our vineyard, curving off from the main house in a gentle arc. Seen from the air, they look like faint scratches, the peeling remains of small streaky scabs from a brush with a prickly bush. That’s our work, visible from afar. The house was never our work—built more than half a century before any of us communards was born. Most of the rest of what one notices as clear evidence of human activity are structures of one kind and another, a few our original handiwork, most much older and in perpetual dialogue between restoration and decay. There they will likely remain, long after the children of the children of the children of us foolish children who decided to move them have died, our little scratches on the face of “mi amante la madre tierra.”

Eve Bridburg: Amanda Palmer Video: What's A Rock Star Doing At A Writers' Conference?

Grub Street -- one of the nation's leading literary arts centers -- invited Amanda to speak because they admire how she's taken control of her own artistic destiny by connecting directly with her fans. Past speakers in the series -- which aims to educate writers about the opportunities and challenges ushered in by the digital age -- have included pioneering writers, editors and publishers. The audience of writers didn't quite know what to expect when Amanda appeared ukulele in hand, but within a few minutes, it was clear that she was taking them places far deeper than the marketing opportunities of Facebook, Twitter, and Kickstarter. Going against current conventional thinking, Amanda doesn't suggest writers take their fragile creations into the loud, dangerous marketplace. Also on HuffPost Books: Close Beware. 1. Beware. Creativity is the number one quality prized by the CEOs of the nation's top 500 companies, but can you actually teach kids to be creative?

Thanks to This Free Class, Every Educator Can Learn Design Thinking - Education

If a school is highly personalized and rooted in design thinking, a structured process of creative problem solving, it's possible. Students can't learn design thinking if their teachers aren't trained in it, so to help give educators the tools and methods to integrate this mindset into their work, Edutopia, IDEO, and New York's Riverdale Country Day School, are teaming up to offer "Design Thinking for Educators," a free, five-week virtual class.

Teachers are essentially designers when they think strategically about how to arrange their classroom to encourage more collaboration or ensuring that they have effective parent communication systems in place. The class doesn't include lectures or webinars—all the materials will be posted online—so participants will be able to work through the projects and activities at their own pace. Hackathon Pilot Update #3: A design thinking primer. As I mentioned in a previous update, we are using a process inspired by design thinking for the Hackathon Pilot.

Hackathon Pilot Update #3: A design thinking primer

Some of you will already be familiar with design thinking principles, but just in case the concept is new to you, I thought I’d write a short design thinking primer. What is design thinking? Design thinking is a process by which groups can collaboratively solve problems or explore opportunities by building ideas up instead of tearing them apart. Because of its “building up” approach, design thinking is quite distinct from the analytical problem-solving process used regularly in the business world. Typically, analytical thinking attempts to break something down into its component parts in order to study it. Design thinking is a great tool for community-based projects like the MIX because it is optimized for collaboration and inclusiveness. How does the design thinking process work? 1. 2. Story. If my Granddad were still alive this year, we'd be celebrating his hundredth birthday.

Story

We often made fun that his birth was the second major disaster of 1912. When he died he took a thousand stories with him. Back to school time and millions of British kids are heading back to classrooms to embark on the national curriculum so beloved of busybody ministers.

One item in particular on that curriculum will bemuse the youngsters. It goes by the initials ICT, short for information and communication technology. If they are in primary school, they will have to get through key stages 1 and 2. Secondary pupils have to get through stages 3 and 4 which, the soon-to-be-abolished Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency tells us, "have been developed to enable schools to raise standards and help all their learners meet the challenges of life in our fast-changing world". Michael Gove, the government's education supremo, has set in train a root-and-branch overhaul of the national curriculum, but for the time being our kids are stuck with the current version. Reading through it, one is struck by its quaint, well-intentioned style.
