Phi relationships in a color spectrum produce rich, appealing color combinations Michael Semprevivo has introduced a concept called the PhiBar, which applies phi relationships to frequencies, or wavelengths, in the spectrum of visible colors in light.
Colors in the spectrum that are related by distances based on phi or the golden section produce very rich and visually appealing combinations. This is illustrated below on the screen shot of his PhiBar program. You can experiment with the PhiBar program, written in Visual Basic. Color theory is a human construct. We need ways to define what we mean by color, and how colors can be ordered, related to each other, and adjusted to become new colors. Color theory attempts to meld together the facts we have about color in a way that gives us common ground to discuss and use colors. Early theories of color were pure speculation. Eventually, with more data at hand, the theories began to mirror and explain how the brain really perceives color. Color is a perception, a response of the brain to data received by the visual systems. What is real is that objects emit light in various mixtures of wavelengths. When we started “25 New Faces” in 1998, one of our aims was to cover the newly emerging filmmakers who we loved but who might not find places in our quarterly print issues. Then, as the series developed and our selected filmmakers went on to great things, the list developed its reputation as a talent spotter. Indeed, it’s been a thrill to watch our picks go on to critical and audience success, Sundance Grand Prizes, and even Academy Awards. But the list has another function too. As much as it is forward-looking, hoping to catch people early in what we think will be amazing careers, it’s also our personal and sometimes idiosyncratic snapshot of the current independent scene.
