Giving a PowerPoint is NOT a Student Centered Lesson 21st Century teaching models call for a more student centered classroom. No longer is the teacher the holder of all knowledge. Students are able to conduct research, use social media tools to ask questions and find new information. If we are asking students in each lesson to Communicate their ideas, Collaborate, Critically Think and to use Creativity (which is not art projects) then the lessons need to be centered around the students actively being engaged in an activity. A teacher created PowerPoint can absolutely be helpful in classroom instruction. However, we need to start moving away from the PowerPoint being the center of the lesson where students are told the information.

Design Thinking with iPads Design thinking is a powerful tool to really get your students thinking about and tackling a problem or topic at a much deeper level. It is a structured task that focuses on giving considerable time to thinking about and empathising with the people within the situation (Target audience or client), designing and prototyping a possible solution that is immediately challenged in order to improve it. It is used much in business and the design industry but can be used as a general classroom task within any subject area. It also gets students to work quickly without much introduction.

Creating a Discussion Board While I want threaded discussions in Google Classroom, I do not want them in the stream. Multiple student responses will clutter up the Google Classroom stream quickly. I always say “the answer is always a spreadsheet” so I created a way to use Google Sheets for a threaded discussion and use it in Google Classroom. Ed Tech Frameworks: Why I Don't Use TPACK or SAMR with my Teachers **Update 4/26/14: I LOVE the responses to this post; they made me consider a lot of different ways of looking at TPACK and SAMR, and really stretched my thinking. If you read this post, also read the comments- and check out the links that some people have included!I’m going to preface this post by saying that I think both TPACK and SAMR are incredibly useful frameworks- and I use them a lot in my work with education technology. While I don’t want to completely discount either framework in this post, I do want to start a discussion- and explain why I am currently not finding them completely effective in my work with teachers. TPACK looks at the collaboration between technology, pedagogy, and content and argues that teachers need knowledge of all three. I agree with this statement, but I don’t agree with how this framework is presented.

6 Ed Tech Tools To Try In 201 6 About a year ago, I published an e-book called the Teacher’s Guide to Tech. Over the last month, I have been updating it for 2016, adding over 30 new tools and refreshing the information I had about the original ones. I have to say, the 2015 version was excellent, but now it’s SO MUCH BETTER.
