Math Learning Disabilities By: Kate Garnett While children with disorders in mathematics are specifically included under the definition of Learning Disabilities, seldom do math learning difficulties cause children to be referred for evaluation. In many school systems, special education services are provided almost exclusively on the basis of children's reading disabilities. Even after being identified as learning disabled (LD), few children are provided substantive assessment and remediation of their arithmetic difficulties. This relative neglect might lead parents and teachers to believe that arithmetic learning problems are not very common, or perhaps not very serious. However, approximately 6% of school-age children have significant math deficits and among students classified as learning disabled, arithmetic difficulties are as pervasive as reading problems.

Cuisenaire Environment Full Screen Version Click on 'Rods', to choose a Cuisenaire rod and then drag it onto the squared background. More rods can be added in a similar way and aligned as you wish. A rod can be rotated by by clicking any key whilst dragging. The background squares can be altered (for example increasing/decreasing their size) using the 'View' menu. DragonBox Algebra 12+ DragonBox Algebra 12+ is a must-have tool for students so they can earn better grades and gain confidence in algebra and mathematics. It is based on the award winning game DragonBox Algebra 5+ but covers more advanced topics in mathematics and algebra: * Parentheses* Positive and Negative signs* Addition of Fractions (Common Denominators)* Collection of Like Terms* Factorization* Substitution DragonBox Algebra 12+ gives players a greater understanding of what mathematics is all about: objects and the relationships between objects.

Exploring Multivariable Calculus And then relaunch Chrome. Instructors: If you are an instructor using this project in any way, please send me an email to let me know of your interest. I would love to see more people using the materials from this project, and it is important that I be able to report how the project is doing to the NSF. Decomposing Numbers Into Three Parts - Math Coach's Corner I’ve been working with my Firsties on composing and decomposing numbers, and we are currently working on combinations for eight. I decided to take it in a different direction this week and work on decomposing into three parts, so I made a part/whole mat with three parts. The lesson started as I handed out the materials. I handed out the part/whole mats, and I gave the first student a handful of teddy bear counters, which turned out to be 5.

21 GIFs That Explain Mathematical Concepts “Let's face it; by and large math is not easy, but that's what makes it so rewarding when you conquer a problem, and reach new heights of understanding.” Danica McKellar As we usher in the start of a new school year, it’s time to hit the ground running in your classes! Math can be pretty tough, but since it is the language in which scientists interpret the Universe, there’s really no getting around learning it. Check out these gifs that will help you visualize some tricky aspects of math, so you can dominate your exams this year. Ellipse:

What does 0^0 (zero raised to the zeroth power) equal? Why do mathematicians and high school teachers disagree Clever student: I know! Now we just plug in x=0, and we see that zero to the zero is one! Cleverer student: No, you’re wrong! Introducing Number Bonds with Hands-On Experiences - Math Coach's Corner Last week I blogged about number bonds and part/whole thinking, something I’ll be working with my Firsties on after the break. I’ve been thinking through how I want the lessons to go in my head. This is going to be my introductory lesson the first day back. Put linking cubes of two colors into a bag. There’s nothing magic, of course, about using linking cubes. You could use teddy bear counters or other manipulatives.

Math Monday: Hula Hoop Geometry, Part 1 By Glen Whitney for the Museum of Mathematics Math Mondays have so far featured a wide array of different items from which one can make a tremendous variety of geometric constructions, but there has not yet been one on hula hoops. This week and next we’ll remedy that oversight.

Addictive Game for Practicing Combinations for Ten I'm linking up with Meg at The Teacher Studio and other great math bloggers this week for the Loved that Lesson linky. Be sure to check out the other posts! My lesson is not so much a lesson as it is a game. I pull small intervention groups for grades 1-5, and I have been playing this game with all of my groups! They absolutely love it.
