Grasshopper Space Frame In this tutorial we will look at how to generate a spaceframe. Although the beginning is quite straight forward , the difficulty arises when the top frame has to be defined. It tackles a typical problem with Grasshopper , the list and tree editing. Due to the fact that Grasshopper doesn't store object names but defines the geometry in an indexed list makes the selection of objects sometimes quite arduous. The Design Space frame RHINO: GRASSHOPPER DEFINITIONS - RHINO / GH This definition was developed for my final thesis project to generate a louver system based on functional requirements within the building. The performance was then tested in Ecotect. A large part of my thesis design involved invertible arena seating with many moving parts. I used Grasshopper as a means to develop the seating testing clearances, site lines, and many other variables. This definition looks at taking any curved surface, and generating weaving geometry across it. The parametric skyscraper uses Grasshopper to generate the entire structure.

Digging on Shigeru I’m fascinated by Shigeru Ban’s Nine Bridge Club house. The projection of the a rectangular grid down into these funnel shapes is such a simple idea on a large scale and totally mind bending in the details. For my sketch, I made a quarter of one funnel with a revolve, cut it down to a square edge, divided the surface, then turned off the U and V grids, and used intersects projected from Level 1. The panel is just a half step pattern with this geometry. Plenty of flaws in the lattice (intersect based gridlines can get a little funky at the edges, particularly in tangency conditions) but it’s getting there.
