New Unit: Immigration Thanks to the addition of another unexpected day at home (snow day #6), I’ve been able to devote quite a bit of time to the next unit that Spanish IV is going to explore: Immigration in the United States. Before I go any further, I must say that I am indebted to the great, original work of Kara Jacobs @(karacjacobs) and the additions of Pilar Munday (@mundaysa) and @cristinaZimmer4. Next, I would like to say that while this is a unit that I will be using with my Spanish IV students, I think that there is material here that can be used with all levels of proficiency, including novice. I’ve created a database for 29 songs that deal with immigration, 17 videos that deal with immigration and 35 links on the web for authentic resources both in Spanish and in English. This is my Pinterest board, where I have been collecting resources for the past several months.

Basic Spanish Phrases for Travel It doesn't take much to be understood in Spanish—the folks who speak it in Latin America and Europe are forgiving of errors and very helpful. A combination of sometimes silly pantomime and Spanish basic words and phrases are what you need most to travel in a Spanish-speaking country. "Please" and "thank you" go a long way, and a phrasebook is a big help.

How to exploit the full learning potential of an L2 song in the language classroom How to exploit the full learning potential of a target language song in the L2 classroom As Robert Lafayette wrote in his 1973 article ‘Creativity in the foreign language classroom’, ‘songs are often sung the day before a vacation, or on a Friday afternoon or when we have a few extra minutes’. This resonates with my experience, and there is nothing majorly wrong with it – why not having a bit of fun for fun’s sake every now and then, especially when your students’ are tired or in festive mode?

The Tree of Languages Illustrated in a Big, Beautiful Infographic Click image, then click again, to enlarge Call it counterintuitive clickbait if you must, but Forbes' Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry made an intriguing argument when he granted the title of "Language of the Future" to French, of all tongues. "French isn’t mostly spoken by French people and hasn’t been for a long time now," he admits," but "the language is growing fast, and growing in the fastest-growing areas of the world, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. The latest projection is that French will be spoken by 750 million people by 2050.
