Lightning talk - Wikipedia A lightning talk is a very short presentation lasting only a few minutes, given at a conference or similar forum. Several lightning talks will usually be delivered by different speakers in a single session, sometimes called a data blitz. History[edit] The YAPC (Yet Another Perl Conference) 19100 Conference came up with the term “lightning talk” at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. The term was first coined by Mark Jason Dominus in June 2000.[1][2] The practice of lightning talks was first known to be used at the Python Conference in 1997, but was not named until the YAPC 19100 Conference.[3] Riddle Interactive Download the plug-in tools you need to use our games and tools, or check to see if you've got the latest version. The Best List Of Mindmapping, Flow Chart Tools, & Graphic Organizers I’m just making this a very “quick and dirty” list — at least for now — because, for the life of me, I can’t figure out how or why all the online mindmapping and flow-chart tools that are out there have any educational application. It seems to me that there really isn’t much of a value-added benefit to doing any of this online as opposed to doing it on pen and paper — except, perhaps, it will look a lot nicer (and save paper). I do have my students use a lot graphic organizers in the classroom, and am including some resources for them in this list, too. Maths Maps – an engaging way to teach Maths with Google Maps It’s been around for a few years now and had plenty of interest from around the world already, but Mr G Online has only just discovered Maths Maps. From first impressions, I am absolutely blown away by the idea. The brainchild of leading UK educator Tom Barrett, (now based in Australia), Maths Maps uses Google Maps as the launching pad for Maths Investigations. Barrett’s vision was for teachers around the world to collaborate on building Maths Maps, examples of some seen in the screenshots on the left.

The Best Online Virtual “Corkboards” (or “Bulletin Boards”) NOTE: First, Wallwisher, the popular virtual “corkboard” or “bulletin board” Web tool changed their name — they’re now known as Padlet (though all their old links using the Wallwisher name work fine). Now, Corkboard.Me, a similar tool, just announced they’re changing their name, too — they are now known as NoteApp. Wallwisher was the first online application that let you easily place virtual post-it notes on a virtual corkboard or bulletin board, and allow you to post text, images, and/or videos on them.

Creative Classroom Tools: Math Quest - A Problem Solving Adventure One of my favorite math units to do with upper elementary students is Math Quest! I very rarely repeat units in my classroom (there are too many great new things to try, right?), but Math Quest is one I have returned to year after year. So, I thought I'd share some of the ways I use this AMAZING Interact Unit with my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.
