10 Free Reading Tests for Students in Grades 5 Through 9 Introduction As noted above, I am offering 10 free reading tests on this page. All of them are short--students can complete them in about 15 minutes or so. I have found that shorter tests bring certain advantages. Once everyone is finished, papers can be exchanged, checked, and returned for instant feedback. This allows time for students to ask questions about items they missed or to find out why their own answers were incorrect.

Very Short Stories For High School & Middle School Howard is an avid short story reader who likes to help others find and understand stories. If your students are struggling to get into the short story, or you're pressed for time, here are some very brief stories to get you started. They're not as short as Hemingway's famous six-word story (For sale: baby shoes, never worn.), but they're manageable even for reluctant readers. Most are under 2,000 words; I've included an approximate word count where I could. If you want to be able to reference a print edition at your leisure, one of my favorites is "Little Worlds" (Amazon). This anthology has 31 short stories for students.

Reading Skills When you're a graduate people expect you to use a vocabulary which is wider than a school-leaver's. To expand your vocabulary: Choose a large dictionary rather than one which is ‘compact' or ‘concise'. You want one which is big enough to define words clearly and helpfully (around 1,500 pages is a good size). Avoid dictionaries which send you round in circles by just giving synonyms. A pocket dictionary might suggest: ‘impetuous = rash'. Best Free Children's eBooks Online Introduction This is a listing of 234 sites that legally offer free ebooks for children to read.
