The police deny kettling any “lawful protest”. Police were called at around 5pm after receiving reports of demonstrators throwing smoke bombs, breaking down doors, and allegations of assault against university staff. Almost all the protesters were then held in a raised courtyard for several hours, before being searched by police and asked to give their details on camera. Many students claimed they had witnessed arrests when people refused to give their details to police as a requirement to leave the kettle. Simon Natas, from law firm ITN Solicitors, told The Independent that the High Court had “ruled that it was unlawful for the police to require people to provide their names and addresses as a condition of release from a kettle or containment”.

On Wednesday 29 January, 150 students from around the country met at Birmingham University to discuss the next steps in their campaigns against the privatisation of education, outsourcing of university services and selling off of student debt.

Banned from Birmingham

After the meeting, the students picked up red and black flags, put on masks and marched around the campus. Some unfurled a banner from the top of Old Joe, the university’s clock tower named after Joseph Chamberlain. Others spray painted and chalked slogans onto the red brick walls: ‘Occupy, Strike, Resist’; ‘No more 1984.’ When protesters tried to enter university buildings, security tried to stop them. There was some pushing and shoving. A group of up to 100 protesters were surrounded by police. Of the 13 arrested, some were held in custody for more than 24 hours.

Following the meeting students held a demonstration on campus and proceeded to occupy the Great Hall. The occupation was broken up by security and the West Midlands Police. Students were then kettled for up to four hours and denied access to shelter, food, water and toilets. Thirteen students were eventually arrested, with one student being hospitalised. In the following account, Deborah Hermanns, a student at the University of Birmingham, describes her experience of being arrested and released without charge and the University's decision to suspend her and four other students. The presence of a conflict of interest is independent of the occurrence of impropriety.

Conflict of interest

Therefore, a conflict of interest can be discovered and voluntarily defused before any corruption occurs. A widely used definition is: "A conflict of interest is a set of circumstances that creates a risk that professional judgement or actions regarding a primary interest will be unduly influenced by a secondary interest. "[1] Primary interest refers to the principal goals of the profession or activity, such as the protection of clients, the health of patients, the integrity of research, and the duties of public office. Secondary interest includes not only financial gain but also such motives as the desire for professional advancement and the wish to do favours for family and friends, but conflict of interest rules usually focus on financial relationships because they are relatively more objective, fungible, and quantifiable.

Article by R Brennan The recent suspension of five students from the University of Birmingham after the demonstration on the 29th of january has bought to the attention of many of the other students and staff the unjust procedures in place at the University. When dissenting student and staff voices are heard, management are quick to repress them through various means – disciplinaries, suspensions, promotion freezes and department cuts. Despite this, the University management have other, less open and more insidious ways of silencing independent thought and action from their students. Suffering from mild anxiety attacks after having been seriously intimidated by a member of security staff during the occupation at Horton Grange Conference Centre and having been kettled for four hours by police at the national demonstration on the 29th, I was advised by friends to go see the University Counselling Service.

At last year's conference I experienced an NUS which is elitist, bureucratic and driven by one group of people.

Deborah Hermanns @University of Birmingham Guild of Students

Said group could prevent the success of any motions which they did not agree with, including quite some either submitted by our students or supported by Guild policy. It was not a pleasant experience and being completely new to the whole process it did not feel like I was doing a good job at passing policy representative of the opinions of our students back in Birmingham. This is the exact reason why I want to go back this year and actually try to make a difference.

I have a much better understanding of the NUS now and will be able to properly contribute. Free speech under threat in UK universities. Five University of Birmingham students were suspended following a national demonstration on campus on Wednesday 29 January (Online report, 30 January).

An email from Dr Chris Twine, director of student services, was sent around the College of Social Sciences stating that the five students "have been suspended from study and barred from University premises with immediate effect" and are "not to be allowed access to any teaching or learning activities". These suspensions follow a national meeting and demonstration at the university, which culminated in an occupation of the Aston Webb's Great Hall. When the students attempted to peacefully leave the hall, they were kettled by police officers and university security.

The five were held for more than four hours, before being released, one by one, to be questioned by the police at 6pm that evening.
