Although Cade engaged in many areas of medical research, he is widely remembered as the leader of the research team that formulated the sports drink Gatorade.[1] Early life and education[edit] Robert Cade was born in Waterford, Wisconsin on September 26, 1927.[2] He was a fourth-generation Texan.[3] Cade took an early interest in athletics, and ran the mile in four minutes, twenty seconds at Brackenridge High School,[2] a very respectable time for a high school athlete in the early 1940s.[4] He graduated from Brackenridge High School in May 1945, and served in the U.S. J. Academic career[edit] Following an MSc in Human Movement Sciences at Maastricht University in the Netherlands he completed his PhD in 1997 at the same university studying aspects of carbohydrate and fat metabolism during exercise.[2] After postdoctoral research at the University of Texas in Austin, Jeukendrup became the youngest professor at the University of Birmingham at the age of 35.[3] He was a Professor of Exercise Metabolism at the University of Birmingham for over 12 years. He also served as a Director of the Human Performance Lab at the same university.[4] Jeukendrup has authored several books on sports nutrition and over 200 peer reviewed journal articles on exercise and sports nutrition.[5] His research interests include metabolic responses to exercise, regulation of carbohydrate and fat metabolism, sports nutrition, gastrointestinal complaints during exercise, training and over-training.
