Self-portraits in chronological order by REMBRANDT It is particularly interesting if the various stages of the creative renewal of an artist can be followed on self-portraits so that the change in style and the change in maturity can be studied simultaneously.
From this point of view Rembrandt's self-portraits are without parallel. They are the inexhaustibly rich documents of a human and artistic self-examination lasting a lifetime. In the art of the self-portrait Rembrandt exerted the greatest influence on those painters who rejected the solemn pomp of the Baroque and endeavoured to tell the truth simply and without external trappings. Willard Wigan. Barnaby Furnas. The explosive moment versus painting's innate stillness has been a central concern of Barnaby Furnas's work over the past decade.
Drawing on US history and culture, the American artist presents restless, radiant paintings of subjects including Civil War-era battles and high-octane stadium rock gigs, chronicling crescendos of excitement - religious, political, sexual - as they career towards tipping points of uncertain outcome. These are at once brutal and elegant works, bound up with the excesses of the world yet brought into being through the prism of art history. From Cubism's fracturing of the picture plane, through Futurism's attempts to capture movement, via 'blood and guts' outpourings of Abstract Expressionist and the transcendental spaces of colour field painting, Furnas entwines history with art history in provocative combinations of narrative and form.

Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918) was an Austrian artist from Vienna who was one of the pioneers of Symbolism and Art Nouveau who is best known for his paintings though was also an incredibly prolific draftsman.
"All art is erotic" — Gustav Klimt We usually use self portraits of the artists on ErotiCart, however Klimt famously has no self portrait and is popularly quoted saying "I have never painted a self-portrait. I am less interested in myself as a subject for a painting than I am in other people, above all women...There is nothing special about me. I am a painter who paints day after day from morning to night...Who ever wants to know something about me... ought to look carefully at my pictures. " Bridget Riley. Robert Buelteman uses high voltage photography Forget the notion of a reverent nature photographer tiptoeing through the woods, camera slung over one shoulder, patiently looking for perfect light.
Robert Buelteman works indoors in total darkness, forsaking cameras, lenses, and computers for jumper cables, fiber optics, and 80,000 volts of electricity. This bizarre union of Dr. Frankenstein and Georgia O’Keeffe spawns photos that seem to portray the life force of his subjects as the very process destroys them. Buelteman’s technique is an elaborate extension of Kirlian photography (a high-voltage photogram process popular in the late 1930s) and is considered so dangerous and laborious that no one else will attempt it-even if they could get through all the steps.
Buelteman begins by painstakingly whittling down flowers, leaves, sprigs, and twigs with a scalpel until they’re translucent. Via Wired. Egon Schiele Image Gallery. Mc escher. Art of M. C. Escher.
