"It’s just as well that Margaret Dewhurst, winner of this year’s Ar chitectural Association student summer pavilion contest, has long hair. If she had cropped her long, flowing locks, she might not have had the inspiration for her project. Dewhurst’s concept for the pavilion, entitled Bad Hair, was inspired partly by the sensation of wet hair drying over her face. “The aim was to create a similar visual effect, and it has since morphed into the Bad Hair pavilion, made of glue-laminated strands that crisscross over a sphere and sweep to the f loor to enclose the passer-by in a shadowy tangle,” says the 19-year-old architecture student.

I’m sorry, I got a bit excited. But I never thought I’d get this far: actual, geometrically correct 3D Voronoi subdivision . Following my shotgun approach to 3D Voronoi subdivisions in the voronoiBall , it was time to reconsider the problem.

Forgotten code: fine structure 3D | W:Blut

http://www.wblut.com/2008/07/05/forgotten-code-fine-structure-3d/ When I cobbled together ‘ fine structure ’, I also tried my hand on a 3D version. For over a year, I completely forgot where I put the code, until this evening. Most of the code is rough but two pieces are presentable. Click the images to go to the constructs. When in lo-res, move the mouse up or down to adjust the threshold level of the noise curves. Clicking the applet switches between dynamic lo-res mode and static hi-res mode.

Wreath attractor: parameter study | W:Blut

What I call the wreath attractor isn’t a chaotic or strange attractor in the mathematical sense. But I started using the name and it kind of stuck. I guess the most we can say is that it’s a transform: In my implementation p0 to p4 are normal real parameters with typical ranges from –1 to +1 for p1 to p3. p0 and p4 are about 10 times larger. p5 is a special case and can take only discrete values: 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5,… This system of equations lends itself well to experimentation. For example, limiting the source, the possible starting positions of the tracing particles, has a profound impact on the final look. http://www.wblut.com/2009/01/21/wreath-attractor-parameter-study/

The aim of the project is to question the role of computer-aided design methods in urban development, to ask in which parts of the design process the use of the computer can be appropriate. While commonly the focus of most computer aided design sotware is on drawing layouts, that are defined by various analog methods, it does not give the designer any information about the quality of the design itself. The developed tool assists the designer in an early step of the design process, where basic principles of the layout are defined. http://muehlseife.blogspot.com/search/label/processing
