Understanding How Mountains Form Across Interior North America

The Bighorn Mountains rise prominently above the flat, windswept plains of eastern Wyoming. With elevations exceeding 13,000 feet, the mountains' exposed crystalline rocks and the layered sedimentary rocks that cover them form a structural arch that is more than 100 miles long. The center of the arch is composed of 2.5 billion year old granite and gneiss crystalline rock that was thrust from the Earth's interior during a mountain building episode about 40-50 million years ago. Earth Structure: Earthquakes

Have you ever been in an earthquake? Some people go through them all the time. In California there are dozens every day but they are usually very small. Researchers create 3-D laser maps that show how earthquake changes landscape. Geologists have a new tool to study how earthquakes change the landscape down to a few inches, and it's giving them insight into how earthquake faults behave.

In the Feb. 10 issue of the journal Science, a team of scientists from the U.S., Mexico and China reports the most comprehensive before-and-after picture yet of an earthquake zone, using data from the magnitude 7.2 event that struck near Mexicali, northern Mexico in April, 2010. "We can learn so much about how earthquakes work by studying fresh fault ruptures," said Michael Oskin, geology professor at the University of California, Davis and lead author on the paper. The team, working with the National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping (NCALM), flew over the area with LiDAR (light detection and ranging), which bounces a stream of laser pulses off the ground.

New airborne LiDAR equipment can measure surface features to within a few inches. "This would be very hard to see in the field," Oskin said. Weather Wiz Kids weather information for kids. Earthquakes(Earthquakes are not associated with weather, but instead are natural disasters.)

Groundshaking is not the only hazard people face during earthquakes.

They can also trigger landslides. Savage Earth: Hell's Crust. If the magma rises below the ocean, the result is volcanic islands (like the islands of Japan); if the magma rises under land, it forms chains of volcanoes (like the Cascades Range, home to Mount St.

Helens, in the Pacific Northwest). Volcanic explosions of lava, hot gas, dust, and ash (a threat in their own right) can trigger landslides and mudflows, while strong offshore quakes and volcanic explosions can create dangerous tsunamis. The explosion of Indonesia's Krakatoa volcano in August of 1883, for example, generated a tsunami that killed a staggering 36,000 people in neighboring coastal towns. Even if you live away from plate boundaries, you aren't necessarily safe from Earth's displays of power. The Hawaiian Islands -- located thousands of miles from any plate boundary -- are a prime example.

Earthquakes for Kids. DragonflyTV Kids Do Science - Earthquakes. Earthquake Facts, Earthquake Information, Earthquake Videos, Earthquake Photos. Earthquake facts. An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. A fault is a fracture in the crust of the earth along which rocks on one side have moved relative to those on the other side. Stresses in the earth’s outer layer push the sides of the fault together, pressure builds up and the rocks slip suddenly, releasing energy in waves that travel through the rock to cause the shaking that we feel during an earthquake. Earthquakes tend to be concentrated in narrow zones. There are 7 major crustal plates on earth, about 50 miles (80 km) thick, all in constant motion relative to one another, moving at the speed at which your fingernail grows, at between 10 and 130 mm (from less than one half to 5 inches) per year.

It is estimated that there are several million earthquakes in the world each year. 60 Fascinating Facts about Earthquakes. 13 Crazy Earthquake Facts. Earthquake Fast Facts. Earthquake Facts for Kids - Interesting Information about Earthquakes.
