Wildsingapore sur Twitter : "Excited as the "The Future of Marine Science in Singapore" Workshop is about to start! #marinescienceSG. A hard sell. Studland Bay is an unlikely battleground.

A hard sell

The sandy shore, part of England’s southern coastline, is both a beauty spot and the site of “the most popular naturist beach in Britain”. More importantly for Nature-ists, the seagrass that thrives in the bay’s shallow waters is home to rare sea-horse populations. But keeping it that way is a growing challenge, because Studland is also a playground for the wealthy and powerful, including some yacht-club members who like to anchor their boats there, to the possible detriment of the natural habitat. Scientists can make the case for conservation, but the value of marine sites such as Studland is hard to sell. It is not the Great Barrier Reef with its miles of coral, or the Galapagos Islands and their sharks, turtles and marine iguanas. Last week, the UK government ended a public consultation on the latest round of its attempts to manage conflicts between conservation and other maritime interests.

The UK process sets up these zones in three waves. Expanding the Marine Virosphere Using Metagenomics. Abstract Viruses infecting prokaryotic cells (phages) are the most abundant entities of the biosphere and contain a largely uncharted wealth of genomic diversity.

They play a critical role in the biology of their hosts and in ecosystem functioning at large. The classical approaches studying phages require isolation from a pure culture of the host. Direct sequencing approaches have been hampered by the small amounts of phage DNA present in most natural habitats and the difficulty in applying meta-omic approaches, such as annotation of small reads and assembly.

Serendipitously, it has been discovered that cellular metagenomes of highly productive ocean waters (the deep chlorophyll maximum) contain significant amounts of viral DNA derived from cells undergoing the lytic cycle. Author Summary Prokaryotic species contain extremely large gene pools (pan-genome) the study of which has been constrained by the difficulties in getting enough cultivated representatives of most of them.

DNA barcoding to monitor marine mammal genetic diversity. Marine mammals are flagship and charismatic species, very attractive for the general public.

Nowadays, they are also considered as highly relevant sentinel of the marine realm. Their presence and their welfare in an area is thought to indicate the health of the place, whereas their disappearance, their displacement, or a decrease in their abundance or health could reflect negative environmental changes, whether of anthropogenic origin or not. Monitoring marine mammal biodiversity is often difficult to perform. If some species can be easily observed, others are more difficult to detect, because for instance, of their scarcity or their discrete behavior. One of the solution suggested by scientists is based on the organization of stranding networks, listing and recording marine mammal strandings, which represent a cost-effective means to follow the marine mammal biodiversity. Impact statements also have been published online. The Government estimates commercial fishing crews will lose about 2 per cent of their catch. But SA Environment Minister Paul Caica concedes it will be more in some areas. "Those areas that require this highest level of conservation are out in the west coast and indeed around Kangaroo Island and of course we'll see a high level of impact in those areas," he said.

"The commitment that the Government gave that there would be no more than 5 per cent impact on commercial fishers throughout the state, we've come in at around 2 per cent. " Communities have until October 22 to give feedback. A Kangaroo Island fishing group says the Government has significantly under-estimated the economic impact.
