While the stories are mostly set during the eighteen days of the January revolution, they are not reminiscent, but rather an invitation to reflect. The Hour of Curfew – 'Nights of El Warsha' – This 'music hall' production takes a look at the corruption in our society, one that seems impossible to eradicate, and evokes the values that are still our basic demands, such as freedom and social justice. While we look forward to a satisfactory outcome to the revolution, which has deviated significantly, the show ends with a celebration of everyday life as it comes. — Free event — Very limited seating. The festival, which runs from 8-12 September in Amman, is part of a wider, pan-Mediterranean project, which focuses on the role of storytelling in Arab culture. It will feature plays, storytelling performances and films. Hakaya aims to act as a platform for storytelling in life, education, and the arts: linking organisations throughout the Arab world who share the belief that stories are essential to regional cultural development. “In the Arab world storytelling is very much alive” said el Geretly, explaining the impetus behind the ongoing project, of which September’s festival is the latest manifestation. It is a classic storyteller move — reminding the listener to always doubt a little. This is after all a story told only from one perspective. And the narrator is not omniscient. “Zawaya — testimonies from the revolution” put together by independent theater troupe Al-Warsha, and showing again this weekend, is made up of five narratives. While these stories are mostly anchored in the 18 days, they do not hark back to the hope or unity of that moment. Recorded long after the 18 days, some of them over several months, Geretly worked with writer Shadi Atef on the five testimonies. “The idealism of the 18 days remains a kind of reference,” says Geretly.

Indeed, most of what focuses on those 18 days is charged with strong and difficult emotions. The stories we neither listen to nor tell. Nov. 10, Theater to the people: Al-Warsha's unusual venues. No song better depicts the struggle for Cairo’s streets than Salah Jahin’s "Al-Sharaa Lemin?

" (For Whom are These Streets?). “These streets are ours, and ours only, and as for these others, they are not of us,” goes the chorus. For Cairo’s protesters, these “others” are the black-uniformed amn markazy, the central security officers that contain demonstrations. These thoughts must have plagued Dina El Wedidi when she was asked to perform at an amn markazy camp in Al-Gabal Al-Ahmar as part of a Ministry of Culture-sponsored initiative to “take theater to the people.” A singer and actor in Al-Warsha theater troupe, Wedidi is also an activist for whom the amn markazy represent the ultimate barrier to change. But the performance changed her mind. Al-Warsha, one of Egypt’s first independent theater troupes, was established in 1987. “My aim has always been to see different members of our fragmented society together on stage.
