(Developed and endorsed by UNESCO, UNHCR, UNICEF and INEE) The Peace Education Programme teaches the skills and values associated with peaceful behaviours.

Peace Education

The programme is designed to enable and encourage people to think constructively about issues, both physical and social and to develop constructive attitudes towards living together and solving problems that arise in their communities through peaceful means. The programme allows the learners to practice these skills and helps them discover the benefits for themselves so that they psychologically 'own' the skills and behaviours.

To ensure that it is a viable programme, it is essential that peace education is not a 'one-off' initiative but rather a well structured and sustained programme. None of us learns these behaviours instantly and if programmes to change or develop behaviours are to succeed, they must be both activity based and sustained through a structured and sustained programme. By Andrew Mack Over the past four decades, there has been an astonishing, though little noticed, decline in the number of autocratic regimes around the world.

War Without Weapons: How Non-Violent Campaigns Reduce the Incidence of War

In the mid-1970s, there were some 84 autocracies worldwide; by 2012 there were just 20 — a 75 percent decline. This shift has been evident to a greater or lesser degree in every region of the world. Successful campaigns of non-violent direct action have played a substantial role in helping drive this decline. Robert Thurman- Peace with the Planet Panel - 1 of 5 - Newark peace Summit. Breaking the Cycle of Violent Conflict with Johan Galtung. Johan Galtung. Starting with founding the Peace Research Institute in Oslo (PRIO) in Norway when he was only 29 years old, Johan Galtung became the 'founding father' of peace research in Europe and ultimately had a worldwide impact on our modern understanding of peace and the structure of conflict.

Johan Galtung

Quite properly regarded as one of the -- if not the -- key founder of conflict and peace research, especially in Scandinavia, Johan Galtung comes from several widely varied intellectual traditions, with links to mathematics, the physical sciences, medicine and sociology -- all of which give him an eclectic background from which to think and write about peace, conflict, and injustice and their transformation into what might become a better world. As he describes in the interview, Dr. A Time-Lapse Map of Every Nuclear Explosion Since 1945 - 3 Times Faster. A new approach to curbing violence in schools - Video on NBCNews. The Empathic Civilisation. Elise Boulding - Parent of the Field. If anyone is to be justifiably called a “parent” of the field of peace and conflict research it is Elise Boulding, who, together with her equally influential husband Kenneth, had a hand in most of the pioneering initiatives of the 1950s, the 1960s, and beyond.

As Dr. Boulding makes clear in her interview, the Bouldings’ Quaker backgrounds made it almost inevitable that they would be drawn towards the study of the causes of war and the construction of a peaceful world as part of their research in the aftermath of the Second World War and with the on-set of the Cold War. Kenneth had a background in the study of economics in the days before this field was captured by mathematical modelers and this shows clearly in some of his earlier works, such as Conflict and Defense and the papers he wrote for the General Systems Yearbook. Elise, by contrast, had studied sociology and this clearly influenced her analyses of societal sources of violence and the search for a peaceful society.

Gene Sharp. Gene Sharp's work on the theory and practice of non-violent action has been seminal and ultimately utilized as a handbook for direct political action by activists in their efforts to overthrow repressive regimes. His impact on our understanding of 'peaceful action' has been pivotal, making him a highly deserving, if somewhat out of the ordinary, 'parent' of the peace and conflict studies field. Some figures loom so large in the study of one or other aspect of conflict analysis that it is impossible to separate the individual from the ideas. This is undoubtedly the case with Gene Sharp and the study and the practice of non-violent direct action. Dr. Sharp has had a highly varied career but the end result has been that his ideas are now sought after not merely by scholars but by political activists from countries as far apart of Serbia and the Baltic republics to countries involved in the recent 'Arab Spring.'

But if we want to live, we must struggle.” –Oscar López Rivera, 1991 Wednesday, May 29 will mark 32 years since Puerto Rican activist Oscar López Rivera was arrested and later convicted of “seditious conspiracy,” a questionable charge that Archbishop Desmond Tutu has interpreted to mean “conspiring to free his people from the shackles of imperial injustice.”

Hilary Cremin on Transformational Peace Education in the 21st century. Betty Reardon. This interview took place before the formal start of the “Parents of the Field” project. Hence it is less formally structured and somewhat more discursive that other interviews in the series. Betty Reardon was one of the first women academics to enter and develop the new field of peace education from Teachers College at Columbia University and subsequently throughout the world, providing a strong woman’s voice in a world then dominated by men. Betty Reardon grew up during the Second World War and developed early on in life both an interest in international affairs, including the new experiment in international governance represented by the United Nations, as well as profound doubt about whether international problems could or should be solved through armed force.
