Christophe Jacrot, ISLANDE - NEIGE - neige

Artistes. ‘Ginger Entanglement’ Gives New Meaning to the Nude Female Form. Los Angeles-based photographer Amanda Charchian conceived of Ginger Entanglement as a whole, completed concept: an imagined ring of nude women, who would later manifest as a united entity, bound together by their flaming locks.

‘Ginger Entanglement’ Gives New Meaning to the Nude Female Form

The series, as with the other images the artist will showcase at Pheromone Hotbox at Stephen Kasher Gallery, is a foray into the feminine subconscious, a celebration of both the visible and ineffable elements that conjure the sensations and meanings that we often associate with womanhood. For Ginger Entanglement, Charchian drew inspiration from her training as a painter, using the sculptural quality of the female figure to highlight the tenuous and metaphysical themes that run throughout her work. Together, the women constitute a womb, a sacred covenant, and a divine sisterhood. Portraits of ‘Pretty Chickens’ Highlight the Animal’s Elegance. The chicken doesn’t have the best reputation.

Portraits of ‘Pretty Chickens’ Highlight the Animal’s Elegance

Even self-described animal lovers sometimes make an exception for the ordinary, obnoxious, strange-looking chicken. New York photographer Tamara Staples’ portraits of fabulous, elegant chickens help to give this bird the positive attention it deserves. In the same manner that fancy pigeons are often photographed, Staples presents a variety of chickens seemingly posing before her with magnificence, drama, and grace. The pictures are breathtakingly beautiful, with perfect lighting and rich, textured backgrounds. Ancient breeds of the chicken have been placed as early as 3000 BC, and it is thanks to a passionate group of breeders that many of these breeds continue to thrive. Millions of people from around the world are currently experiencing very different childhoods. Some are living in abject poverty, lacking basic food and sanitation, while others are more fortunate by being born in a country where those things are guaranteed and usually taken for granted.

When photographer James Mollison was asked to come up with an idea for engaging with children’s rights, he found himself thinking of his bedroom: how significant it was during his childhood, and how it reflected what he had and who he was. And with that, he made it his mission to create Where Children Sleep – a collection of stories about children from around the world, told through portraits and pictures of their bedrooms. For About Face, Los Angeles-based photographer Susan Swihart chronicles the evolution of her identical twin daughters as they transition from childhood into adolescence. Beginning when the girls were eight-years-old, she has spent the last three years discovering and exploring the complexities of their bond as well as her own relationship to them.

Swihart explains that as a parent, she understands her role in both encouraging her children’s bond as well as supporting their distinct passions, interests, and personalities. Over the course of the project, she has seen the pair evolve from the enmeshed intimacy of their youth to a more flexible friendship. Where they one depended acutely on one another for security and comfort, the mother has witnessed each gradually venture out into the world in her own separate way. Swihart’s images are staged in collaboration with her daughters, whose relationship with the camera shifts just as their relationship with one another has done. Mads Perchs. Yijun Liao. Post-Soviet world. Sasha O Photography. Sasha O is a portrait photographer based in Belgium. Her “365” project depicts self portraits ranging from beautiful to disturbing and everything in between. They leave the viewer wanting more while taking them into a place of self discovery.

When I saw these images I could not help, but be inspired. I found Sasha’s face to be completely captivating with her expressive eyes and cupid bow lips. She reminds of a character from one of my favorite books as a child, it was a copy of my mother’s “Beauty and the Beast” from 1963 written by Marie Leprince De Beaumont.
