Even the most confident of native speakers can sometimes have doubts about their spelling and grammar. As for learners of English, getting their writing to a really high degree of proficiency can be a real challenge. It’s great to have a friend to turn to in moments of doubt or better still someone who will proof read your work and give you a second opinion, but if you don’t have that luxury then the Grammarly plagiarism checker is probably the next best thing. You simply copy and paste your text in, click and Grammarly will read through your work checking a whole variety of different criteria and give you detailed feedback on a whole variety of issues around your text. Unlike most grammar and spell checkers, Grammarly can be set to be sensitive to your genre of writing and make suggestions based upon that.

Ellclassroom Over the course of my 15 years of teaching in the classroom, there has been a continual debate over management vs. engagement. The argument is that if you create an engaging lesson, then management issues will fade away like a bad stain in the washing machine. The opposite has also been stated, if you have good management then “engagement” (which has been confused with compliance, in this instance), also increases. ~ Tales of a Trainee Teacher ~ The other day, I was watching a documentary about extreme weather and natural disasters, and their effects on schools across the globe (it really wasn’t as dull as it sounds, honestly!). I was amazed at how well handled some events were, but totally shocked in other ways. For example, the documentary showed footage of an earthquake hitting a school in Japan. As soon as the room started shaking, the teacher ordered everybody under the desks, and obviously having done earthquake drills, this was all completed safely within about two seconds flat. A minute or so later, [what I’m guessing was] a more senior member of staff ran to all the classrooms, and ordered everybody out of the building, which was also carried out quickly and calmly. It was so heartwarming to see two students carrying their friend, who had been on crutches.

getting to know the students All teachers know that the new year really starts in September, not January as the rest of the world seems to think. That’s when we make our resolutions to be better people, better colleagues and better teachers. We tell ourselves that we are going to finally get organised, read those articles, clean the desk, plan lessons in advance and make sure we stay on top of marking. Sometimes we even do some of those things….. English Raven The idea of disintermediation ("cutting out the middle man") in terms of professional qualifications has been slowly but surely gathering steam in a variety of fields. Take a look at a range of Position Descriptions for new jobs these days and phrases along the lines of Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience and expertise/skills are becoming more frequent. Private companies (as we might expect) have been quicker to apply this in practice rather than rhetoric compared to educational institutions, mired as most of them are in conservative paper-reliant processes for verifying applicants' skills, but even here we are starting to see change.
