Learning to Knit with a Knit Sheath I’ve been practicing with my knit sheath. I’m not going to say that I’m pretty good. That would be bragging. It might also be untrue. Once you can knit, there is nothing to stop you from designing your own simply shaped garments. This is the first part of a series of articles which will show you how. Knitting is maths; knitwear design even more so. Free knitting patterns I knit this stocking flat A) because I don't enjoy knitting in the round andB) because I think it gives greater flexibility in working fairisle and other intarsia designs. I tend to work it on double pointed needles because during heel shaping you need to switch from working one side to the other. You can knit it on regular needles but slide the work across onto a second needle at appropriate time. Would you believe me if I said I don't want it to end? haha That's not the real reason, although it is a little weird to be writing the last crochet school post (for now). Sock Knitting: How a Sock Should Fit Yes, it’s true! We’re releasing a whole book on the topic of sock fit. (It’s not just about how to fit a sock, but the book also provides lots of great patterns and tips on how to customize a sock pattern for special fit needs.) Sock fit matters for two reasons: comfort and longevity.

Cast On: Provisional A provisional cast-on keeps cast-on stitches "live" so that they can be knit later. It's a very useful technique when you're not sure what kind of edging you'll want or how long to make something. With a provisional cast-on, you can make these decisions at the end of a project, allowing you to respond to the actual garment. I made this tutorial to go with my 70's Ski Hat Project Journal, the provisional cast-on is used to make a cashmere lining for the hat. There are a few ways to make a provisional cast-on. This is my favorite...
