Performance profiling JavaScript Firebug has a great built in JavaScript performance profiling tool, but it’s not supported in IE and sadly that’s what the bulk of Internet users browse with. In particular, IE profiling is something of a dark art. There’s not a lot of resource available to profile that I could find that was particularly useful. So I’ve written a library that allows me to drop in performance timing relatively unobtrusively. Download time.js (compressed time.js) See the tests

Freebie: Free Pixel Patterns for Transparencies in Photoshop Freebies Transparency in web design is very popular these days. A transparent screen over an image makes a light or dark text stand out on a multi-colored photograph. Going a little further, designers are also using pixel patterns to create a mesh over the image. This is not a difficult process, even making the pattern for Photoshop is not complicated, but having a selection of such patterns is just another way of saving time in the middle of a high-pressure project or set of projects. So today we have created a free pattern set with pixel patterns to give different levels of transparency and to add an extra dimension to darkening or lightening images.

Diagram Models and Data Binding One of the principal features of the Model-View-ViewModel design pattern is the use of data binding.

Fatherhood in the Age of Games What it means to be a dad in the age of games, told by game industry dads themselves For Father's Day, we wanted to share something special: The stories of five fathers, telling us what it's like to be fathers, gamers, and fathers of gamers. Sharing their stories are five game industry dads: JavaScript Performance Last night I spoke at the San Francisco JavaScript Meetup. I gave a brand new talk called JavaScript Performance that focuses on script loading and async snippets. The snippet example I chose was the Google Analytics async snippet. The script-loading part of that snippet is only six lines, but a lot of thought and testing went into it. It’s a great prototype to use if you’re creating your own async snippet. I’ll tweet if/when the video of my talk comes out, but in the meantime the slides (Slideshare, pptx) do a good job of relaying the information.
