A Poster Series by Justin Barber

"This humorous poster series takes some of the most common, everyday lies we tell ourselves and hear from others, and bluntly translates them into the unequivocal truth. By visually representing the difference in what we often say but secretly mean, Truth and Lies uncovers the inane conversational nuances that reveal paradoxical dichotomies in our otherwise ordinary life. SteelWork by Jaap Epema. I Can Has Bed?! 7 Upcycled Suitcase Pet Beds for Cat Naps. All kinds of adorable, these converted cat sleepers make for the cutest of naps – as if your feline friend were not already sufficiently snugly!

Atomic Attic is an Oregon company (with an online presence at Etsy) specializing in recycled vintage goods, and while many of their neatest creations come from old suitcases (set on stilts and cushioned with retro pillows) they have other varieties as well. Modular ‘Love Mattress’ Made Flexible for Cuddly Couples. Snuggling is an essential if rarely-discussed component of a comfortable sleeping arrangement for many (pairs of) people, usually aided indirectly by soft mattresses and/or strategic sheet and pillow usage.

This bed-topping design by Mehdi Mojtabvi proposes a different-but-parallel approach, turning a single-piece cushioned support into multiple modules. The resulting strips create optional gaps into which an arm, leg, foot or hand can comfortably slip in order to wrap around a loved one (or perhaps survive being crushed by an over-snuggling canine best friend). As for finding cozy positions, nothing is mandated by the layout in particular – each fold can flex open or closed depending on usage, leaving it up to individuals (or pairs) to make use of it as they will.

Lounging Large: Koala 45 Oversized Hammock Bed. Lay back, relax and maybe catch a nap – with eight of your closest friends – in the adult equivalent of a children’s fort.

Lounging Large: Koala 45 Oversized Hammock Bed

The Koala 45 by Belgian design group Stal Collectief is an oversized hammock that provides an open-air relaxation and hangout space on brightly-colored fabric stretched across a wooden frame. Held together with twelve bolts, the Koala 45 elevates a comfy lounging surface about four feet above the ground. The canopy includes an open area enabling pendant lights to be dropped inside. Pictured is Stal Collectief’s Zwol pendant, a modern twist on the industrial caged trouble light.

A private residence would certainly require an oversized living room to match the proportions of this highly unusual bed, but it would fit right into many modern office environments. Bare Bones: Shelf Lamps Made from Bulbs, Cords & Boards. How many ways can you use three readily-available components from your local hardware store?

As it turns out, some flat wooden boards, lengths of electrical cable and raw construction-style, work-light fixtures can go a long way. William Raffredi is an Italian designer who specializes in simplicity, as shown in this series of shelves, desks and lighting hybrids. It is easy to imagine these various constructions populating an entire room.

Sketches give insights into his design process, showing the endless possibilities of piecing something like this together (which, in retrospect, looks easier than it likely was). Each of these constituent elements readily lends itself to a primary and secondary function. The result is little more than a skeleton – in a way, the product defers to its contents … the shelves take second position to the items that adorn them, with snaking cables and a solitary bare bulb serving simply as added accent pieces. Objects « P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S. Integrated Living Room Interior Designs by Amy Lau. A good interior designer is often much more than just an interior design expert, as Amy Lau demonstrates over and over again with her beautifully composed living room designs.

Integrated Living Room Interior Designs by Amy Lau

She is clearly influenced by modernism and her passion for abstract art but her designs are so different it is only their refined details and degree of internal consistency that show them to be the work of the same interior designer. Also as is the case with many successful designers, Amy does much more than just design interiors – she also has her own limited product line and is often asked to speak or display at colleges, auctions, museums and other places and events. She has been featured in the New York Times, Post and Metropolitan magazine. Why is it so hard to find a good interior designer? Perhaps too many of them are too focused simply on interior design and not the big picture. Paper CD case. [VIDEO]

Fascinating Lamps by Calabarte

The name itself is a portmanteau of two words – art (obviously), and calabash, the fruit that carries his imagination. The calabash is a bottle gourd originating in India, although Calabarte gets his supply from Senegal. Due to ancient domestication and usage, the bottle gourd has an incredibly tough outer shell. Many of the trends we are seeing – and liking - in retail, hospitality, services and even urban planning, deal with smaller size because a strong, growing segment of us is tired of Big. We want small, independent, pop-up, mobile, local, rogue. But – and this is an important but – we want it served up to us in a professional manner, we do not want amateur fumbling even from the smallest providers. In essence, we want what we cannot have from the mega-malls, big boxes, airports, big brands or grocery giants.

And that leads to another important ‘but’. We want small BUT we still want the big, too. You cannot divide consumer habits into age categories or behaviours the way you could a decade or two ago. It is hard to imagine someone whose ideal living environment - city, town or village – would be a vast expanse of gigantic malls where global brands offer indistinguishable wares in boring lookalike stores, or where cavernous big boxes ply cheap goods stacked up floor to ceiling.
