Discovery May Lead to the Creation of Biofuel from CO2 in the Atmosphere

Scientists at the University of Georgia have discovered a way to transform carbon dioxide trapped in the atmosphere into useful industrial products, possibly allowing scientists to make biofuels from CO2 in the atmosphere. Athens, Georgia – Excess carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere created by the widespread burning of fossil fuels is the major driving force of global climate change, and researchers the world over are looking for new ways to generate power that leaves a smaller carbon footprint.

Engineers at Stanford have devised a new way to generate electricity from sewage, using naturally occurring "wired microbes" as mini power plants, producing electricity as they digest plant and animal waste.

In a paper published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, co-authors Yi Cui, a materials scientist, Craig Criddle, an environmental engineer, and Xing Xie, an interdisciplinary researcher, call their invention a microbial battery. They hope it will be used in places such as sewage treatment plants, or to break down organic pollutants in the "dead zones" of lakes and coastal waters where fertilizer runoff and other organic waste can deplete oxygen levels and suffocate marine life. At the moment, however, their laboratory prototype is about the size of a D-cell battery and looks like a chemistry experiment, with two electrodes, one positive, the other negative, plunged into a bottle of wastewater.

In fact, it’s existed for more than a century. But finding a particularly efficient (and cost-effective) version of microbial fuel cell technology has been an ongoing challenge for engineers. United Utilities turns human waste to energy at plant. 22 August 2011Last updated at 09:24 Human waste is being turned into energy in a multimillion-pound project in Lancashire. United Utilities is converting a by-product of waste water at its Blackburn plant into gas. The company is using the method to generate about 15% of the power it uses in its operations - equal to the power consumed in Burnley each year. The power generated helps run the sewage treatment works next to the United Utilities plant. The plant also exports highly nutritious fertilizer to agricultural land across east Lancashire for farmers free of charge. Getting Biofuel from the World’s Garbage. There is plenty of garbage on this planet; in fact there is so much garbage that many developed countries are trying to dump their garbage on the lands of lesser developed countries, at a fee of course.

Getting Biofuel from the World’s Garbage

But does dumping garbage on other places solve the problem? On the contrary it spreads pollutions and diseases. In fact it is more dangerous to dump garbage in the less developed countries (because there are neither technologies available to process it nor enough awareness). Even creating landfills wastes precious resources. Rather than having to dump, what if garbage can be used to generate power? Global Change Biology has published new research that claims replacing gasoline with biofuel from processed garbage could cut global carbon emissions by 80%.

How Landfills Work" The basic parts of a landfill, as shown in Figure 3, are: Bottom liner system - separates trash and subsequent leachate from groundwaterCells (old and new) - where the trash is stored within the landfillStorm water drainage system - collects rain water that falls on the landfillLeachate collection system - collects water that has percolated through the landfill itself and contains contaminating substances (leachate)Methane collection system - collects methane gas that is formed during the breakdown of trashCovering or cap - seals off the top of the landfill Each of these parts is designed to address specific problems that are encountered in a landfill.

So, as we discuss each part of the landfill, we'll explain what problem is solved. Bottom Liner System A landfill's major purpose and one of its biggest challenges is to contain the trash so that the trash doesn't cause problems in the environment. Syngas, or synthesis gas, is a fuel gas mixture consisting primarily of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and very often some carbon dioxide.

A study published in the Institute of Physics’ Environmental Research Letters section today claims that by converting livestock manure to biogas, the United States could reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and generate up to 108.8 billion kW h – 2.9% of the country’s total electricity requirement. The bovine contribution to climate change is no secret, and the concept of harnessing their, er, emissions to provide power is not new. Human waste power plant goes online in the UK. A proposed tax on dinner and a movie in Omaha is about as popular as the latest Paris Hilton flick. Or, for that matter, a hike in property taxes. How about a garbage fee? That's one question being bandied about as the City of Omaha looks for ways to handle its financial woes without closing swimming pools, raising property taxes or levying a tax on dinners, concerts and other forms of entertainment. Unfortunately — or fortunately, depending on your point of view — a residential garbage fee is not an option for addressing the city's 2010 budget crisis. That's because a state law prohibits Omaha — alone among cities in Nebraska — from imposing the fee. But a garbage fee is an option down the road, as the city looks for new ways to fund services and, in the process, reduce the burden on property taxes and the city's general operating fund, said Ron Gerard, spokesman for Mayor Jim Suttle.

Braska's Biomass Energy Generation. In 2009, the companies listed below reported that more than 70 million kilowatthours of electricity were generated by biomass energy in Nebraska, an increase of 4 percent from the 2008 generation of 68,461,115 kilowatthours (see graph and table below). Timberline Energy has constructed and is operating a methane recovery and processing solution that processes methane recovered from the Butler County landfill into clean energy that is used in the boilers of Henningsen Foods. This is an example of a direct use solution. The clean methane provides a renewable and sustainable fuel source, displacing natural gas to fire steam boilers.
