KATANA White Paper | The Foundry

http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/articles/2011/02/21/221/katana-white-paper/ KATANA is a 3D application specifically designed for the needs of look development and lighting in an asset based pipeline. It has been in development since 2004 at Sony Pictures Imageworks and has been their core tool for look development and lighting for all their productions since 'SpiderMan 3', 'Beowulf' and "Surf's Up!". Allow shot specific modification of assets to become part of the lighting 'recipe' for shots to avoid having to deal with large numbers of shot specific asset variants. Deal with potentially unlimited levels of complexity.

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/01/05/academy-announces-seven-visual-effects-finalists/ The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which last month narrowed down the Best Visual Effects category to 15 semifinalists , has announced the seven films that remain in the running for a nomination. They are: Alice in Wonderland , Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 , Hereafter , Inception , Iron Man 2 , Scott Pilgrim vs. the World , and Tron: Legacy . That means The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader , Clash of the Titans , The Last Airbender , Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief , Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time , Shutter Island , The Sorcerer’s Apprentice , and Unstoppable are now officially out of the competition. Five of the remaining seven contenders will end up scoring an Oscar nomination later this month. Which two won’t end up making the cut? My guesses are Hereafter and Iron Man .

[ I've been adding to this post occasionally since I first published it on 8th October 2008 . I tagged it as a work in progress, but now that I've commented a little on every shot, I thought I'd publish the updates (it has more than doubled in length since it first appeared) and declare it (almost) finished. I will continue to update it every once in a while, but I hope you find it interesting and informative in its present form. I still invite comments or further information from anyone who'd like to add to the essay, or who has links or bibliographic references to recommend. ] For the benefit of anyone who is studying this film or just being fascinated by it, I’m going to attempt a shot-by-shot commentary on Georges Méliès ‘ A Trip to the Moon , released in France on 1st September 1902 .

In the wake of William J. Mitchell´s influential publication The Reconfigured Eye (1992), film and media scholars consider the post-photographic era mainly from a skeptical perspective. A confused and speculative discussion has emerged which centers around the ethical question of visual truth. While this notion may be useful in the context of the documentary, the fiction film has developed its own rules of representation. This study therefore aims at investigating the neglected aspects of computer-generated images (CGI) in the context of the fiction film. Based on a detailed look at the technical procedures of digital image production - modeling, texturing, animation, lighting and rendering - it discusses the aesthetic and narrative consequences of the new mode of production through an analysis of several hundred films which integrate CGI into photochemically-produced material using digital compositing. http://zauberklang.ch/vfx_en_css.html
