When we released our report on the colors of the social web, based on data analyzed by our Twitter theme tool, we were surprised that blue was such a dominant color in people's profile designs. Was Twitter's default color influencing their design decisions? Or is blue really THE most popular and dominant color online? ...We decided to look at the colors in the brands from the top 100 sites in the world to see if we could paint a more colorful picture. The Shapes of CSS
Learn Development at Frontend Masters CSS is capable of making all sorts of shapes. Squares and rectangles are easy, as they are the natural shapes of the web. Add a width and height and you have the exact size rectangle you need. Add border-radius and you can round that shape, and enough of it you can turn those rectangles into circles and ovals. We also get the ::before and ::after pseudo elements in CSS, which give us the potential of two more shapes we can add to the original element.

What color are we? By looking at the more than 1 Million people who have used our Themeleon tool to design their Twitter Profile in the past 3 months, we were able to paint a picture of the world connecting colors to locations and profile data.

A Scientific Theory of Color Vision. For many centuries, the behavior of color mixtures was difficult to explain because material color, which seemed to be anchored in "real" objects of the external world, was conceptually distinguished from the "illusory" colors in rainbows or prisms. The two types of mixtures behaved differently, but the reason for the difference was unknown. The trichromatic theory provided the clarifying explanation and prediction of all color sensations as arising in the behavior of the eye. Because the L, M and S receptor responses can be predicted mathematically from the summed intensity of all wavelengths in a light stimulus, the additive primaries empirically connect a measurable light stimulus to a measurable (matchable) color sensation — at least, in experimentally restricted viewing conditions.

Nature provides some of the most striking and beautiful color palettes imaginable! You don’t have to look far to find great inspiration. Flowers especially can give you such a varied and bright color scheme that you will never run out of ideas. I had so many flower pictures I wanted to share with you, but this is one of my favorites. Notice how the complimentary colors of green and red are present in nature.

Infographic of the Day: What Colors Mean Across 10 Cultures
Colors are probably the most obvious way that design varies across cultures (a theme that came up in our interview with Frog Design about designing for China). But the funny thing is that for most designers and companies, those color sensibilities often don't rise past "Red is lucky in China; blue is soothing in the West." That's naive, as this superb infographic by David McCandless and Always With Honor shows. The chart encompasses 10 different cultures, and 62 emotions (!!!).
