I, David (Neufeld), am a farm boy from this area. We’re both from Mennonite church families and so it’s natural enough that we would meet attending the University of Waterloo in Ontario where we were both associated with the Mennonite supported Conrad Grebel College.

We had a bit of an unconventional courting and wedding and then took off to work for Mennonite Central Committee for 10 years in South Africa, Lesotho and Saskatoon before settling onto our homestead in the Turtle Mountains. All four children were born while we were with MCC. THE pilgrimage began with a black-and-white handbill on a campus bulletin board. At the top was a sketch of an ultramodern compound rising above a desert canyon: a city upon a hill. Next came the manifesto. “If you are truly concerned about the problems of pollution, waste, energy depletion, land, water, air and biological conservation, poverty, segregation, intolerance, population containment, fear and disillusionment,” the poster began. Then, at the bottom, the remedy: “Join us.” Occupying the middle of nowhere must have appealed to the students, architects and seekers of the 1970s who founded Arcosanti , an “urban laboratory” in the desert 70 miles north of Phoenix.

Above all, they were able to join an ongoing colloquy with the city’s visionary designer, Paolo Soleri. For the most part, though, they left. Smart Kitchen Space-Saver: Dish Drying Closet Above The Sink

It's a dish rack that's integrated into a bottomless cabinet above the sink, so that the step of drying wet dishes is skipped completely, and are placed there to dry, out of view. Loosely translated from Finnish, it's called a “dish drying closet.” The invention was designed by Maiju Gebhard in the 1940's to cut down on the 30,000 odd hours that a typical housewife supposedly spent during her lifetime washing, drying and putting away the dishes. The racks in these dish drying closets are usually made of plastic-coated steel wire, allowing dishes to dry properly. The Agricultural Building and Equipment Plan List.

Traditional Turf Houses In Iceland In Iceland. The Icelandic turf house was the product of a difficult climate, offering superior insulation compared to buildings solely made of wood or stone, and the relative difficulty in obtaining other construction materials in sufficient quantities. Due to the lack of transport and Iceland’s remoteness, importing foreign timber was not very common and mostly reserved for ship and church building.

However, Iceland did have a large amount of turf that was suitable for construction. photo source.
