There have been academic debates regarding the exact date, but according to the remarkable collection of historic photographs in the Golestan Palace in Tehran, the very first photographic images taken in Iran can be dated between 1839 and 1842. The Iranian Qajar monarch, Mohammad Shah (1808 – 1848), was the first person to be gifted a camera by Queen Victoria. After a few training sessions with the instrument, the monarch’s young son – 11-year old Nasereddin Mirza – showed great enthusiasm for it, and became passionate about learning everything about the magic box that captured light.
Since the development of photography in Iran, the camera has been loyal as a means towards political ends. We love the vibe around artists who work both inside and outside, in the gallery and on walls, who dare raising questions about the ‘value’ of art: the general perception is that outside art is ‘worthless’, unless it is commissioned public art. We love the vibe, the humor, the social awareness and stunts of many of the urban (or rural) artists, just like we love outsider art, but some of the art produced by the not so talented artist who are part of this movement is just plainly dull, too easy and uninspired, therefore casting a dark shadow over a vibrant scene.

EXAMINING THE RECENT SURGE OF INTEREST IN THE SOUND OF 60s & 70s IRAN AND TURKEY A few months ago on a lazy Sunday afternoon, as I was strolling down the quirky fashion drag that is Toronto’s Queen Street, I spotted something in the corner of my eye that seemed just ever so slightly out of context.
Stopping for a moment, I looked into the display window of a trendy vinyl store, and eyed there amongst the colourful sleeves of obscure folk and rock albums the word Zendooni (Persian for ‘Prisoner’) in garish yellow lettering above a conspicuously Iranian-looking woman in a field of sunflowers; Funk, psychedelia and pop from the Iranian pre-revolution generation read the description. Although I had successfully sourced with eagerness the tracks on Zendooni, it wasn’t the first time I’d gone digging in pursuit of Iranian ‘nuggets’ (as record collectors like to call them) from the 60s and 70s; that is, from that brief era of bliss before the shit hit the fan for the Iranian music industry. گنجور.
