Systems | Free Full-Text | Four Decades of Systems Science Teaching and Research in the USA at Portland State University | HTML. 1. Introduction Systems science [1] is the study of general principles that govern systems of widely differing types, and the use of systems ideas and methods in interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary research and socio-technical system design and management. Systems science draws on the natural and social sciences, mathematics, computer science, and engineering to address complex problems in both the public and private sectors. For historical context, both the International Society for the Systems Sciences [2] and the system dynamics field were founded in 1956. The Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences [3] began its annual conference in 1967, and the International Journal of Systems Science [4] began publication in 1970.

The first conference on system dynamics was held in 1976. 2. The Systems Science Graduate Program [12] (SySc) at Portland State University (PSU) was launched in 1970 as one of the first three doctoral programs offered when PSU became a university. Figure 1. Systems thinking is an approach to integration that is based on the belief that the component parts of a system will act differently when isolated from the system's environment or other parts of the system. Standing in contrast to positivist and reductionist thinking, systems thinking sets out to view systems in a holistic manner. Consistent with systems philosophy, systems thinking concerns an understanding of a system by examining the linkages and interactions between the elements that comprise the whole of the system. When you encounter situations which are complex and messy, then systems thinking can help you understand the situation systemically. This helps us to see the big picture - from which we may identify multiple leverage points that can be addressed to support constructive change.

Paradox My dictionary says a paradox is a seemingly absurd or contradictory statement even if it is well founded. In life there are many things that appear absurd and contradictory that are in fact real and true. These paradoxes mean we live in a world of mystery where there is always something new to learn and experience. Every question answered opens up a new question to be solved. Tonight I will talk about some of those paradoxes and how they might help us understand the world we live in.

The first paradox is that we have two competing needs in life beyond our needs for mere survival. On the one hand we need to be individual people with a unique identity and the free will to choose to do what we want. The second need we have is to be accepted by other people. So, one dancing partner is our need to belong; to feel accepted and connected. There is no unity without sacrifice. The other dancing partner is our need to be a unique individual. There is no diversity without inequality.

Biology Red Queen Hypothesis - The Evolutionary Arms Race. The Red Queen Hypothesis, named after the Red Queen in the book Alice in Wonderland, brings together two evolutionary theories. The basis for the entire theory is down to ‘the evolutionary arms race’, where prey and predator constantly evolve together to reach some sort of uneasy balance. An example of the Red Queen Hypothesis might be one of the plants that evolve toxins to kill off predators such as caterpillars. If the plant, under predation selection pressure, evolved a new type of toxin to which the caterpillar had no immunity, most of the caterpillars would die off and the tree would flourish. This victory would be short lived, as only the caterpillars immune to the toxin, even if only a tiny percentage, would breed rapidly, and once again the tree would be under attack.

Multisystemic Therapy — Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is a form of therapy that focuses on helping adolescents and families effectively deal with many of the elements that lead to antisocial behavior in children and teens. The contributing factors are typically found in the child’s or teen’s environment and stem from various causes such as: Personal characteristics of the adolescent (no problem-solving skills)Performance in school (failing grades; inability to understand lessons)Relationships with family members (little to no discipline; dysfunctional communication)Relationships with peers (friends with juvenile delinquents) Treatment is individualized and developed in conjunction with the family.

Program Success Factors Several factors contribute to the success of the Multisystemic Therapy program. Accountability falls on the shoulders of the service providers. Another success factor is the choice to use a home-based model for delivering services.

STANFORD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS—I spoke informally at the WIM banquet about the paucity of tenure-line faculty who focus primarily on gender research, and about the shortage of gender-related material in the new core curriculum. Members of our GSB Organizational Behavior (OB) faculty (male as well as female) do some gender research: for example, Charles O'Reilly, Dale Miller, and Frank Flynn have published papers on gender topics, and Deb Gruenfeld has explicitly included gender in some of her research on power. In addition, Brian Lowery's research focuses on race and Maggie Neale's has done considerable work on diversity, broadly defined (see below).
