Systems thinking

Standing in contrast to positivist and reductionist thinking, systems thinking sets out to view systems in a holistic manner.

Magic and Mystery, Chaos and Complexity

In life there are many things that appear absurd and contradictory that are in fact real and true. These paradoxes mean we live in a world of mystery where there is always something new to learn and experience. Every question answered opens up a new question to be solved. Tonight I will talk about some of those paradoxes and how they might help us understand the world we live in. The first paradox is that we have two competing needs in life beyond our needs for mere survival. The second need we have is to be accepted by other people. So, one dancing partner is our need to belong; to feel accepted and connected.

Www.tlainc.com/subpageR35P.html. Red Queen Hypothesis - The Evolutionary Arms Race. The Red Queen Hypothesis, named after the Red Queen in the book Alice in Wonderland, brings together two evolutionary theories.

Red Queen Hypothesis - The Evolutionary Arms Race

The basis for the entire theory is down to ‘the evolutionary arms race’, where prey and predator constantly evolve together to reach some sort of uneasy balance. An example of the Red Queen Hypothesis might be one of the plants that evolve toxins to kill off predators such as caterpillars. If the plant, under predation selection pressure, evolved a new type of toxin to which the caterpillar had no immunity, most of the caterpillars would die off and the tree would flourish. This victory would be short lived, as only the caterpillars immune to the toxin, even if only a tiny percentage, would breed rapidly, and once again the tree would be under attack.

STANFORD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS—I spoke informally at the WIM banquet about the paucity of tenure-line faculty who focus primarily on gender research, and about the shortage of gender-related material in the new core curriculum.

Gender-Related Material in the New Core Curriculum

Members of our GSB Organizational Behavior (OB) faculty (male as well as female) do some gender research: for example, Charles O'Reilly, Dale Miller, and Frank Flynn have published papers on gender topics, and Deb Gruenfeld has explicitly included gender in some of her research on power. In addition, Brian Lowery's research focuses on race and Maggie Neale's has done considerable work on diversity, broadly defined (see below). Can women be nice and make it to the top? List of systems sciences organizations. Systems science is the interdisciplinary field of science surrounding systems theory, cybernetics, the science of complex systems.

It aims to develop interdisciplinary foundations, which are applicable in a variety of areas, such as engineering, biology, medicine and social sciences. Systems science and systemics are names for all research related to systems theory. It is defined as an emerging branch of science that studies holistic systems and tries to develop logical, mathematical, engineering and philosophical paradigms and frameworks in which physical, technological, biological, social, cognitive and metaphysical systems can be studied and developed.

Researchers demonstrate that brain activity in response to a decision-making challenge predicts the likelihood that released prisoners will be re-arrested.

WIKIMEDIA, GEOFF B HALLPrisoners with relatively low activity in a particular brain region while performing a computer-based decision-making task are more likely to be arrested again on release than those with higher activity in that brain region during the task, according to a study published this week (March 25) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. A team of neuroscientists led by Eyal Aharoni at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan the brains of 96 soon-to-be-released male prisoners. The scans focussed on the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), an area of the brain associated with decision-making and motor control, as the prisoners completed challenges on a computer that required them to inhibit impulsive reactions as they made quick-fire decisions.
