The thorium-powered car: Eight grams, one million miles

Laser Power Systems from Connecticut is developing a method of propulsion that uses thorium to produce electricity to power a car engine. Thorium is an element similar to uranium and because it is such a dense material it has the potential to produce massive amounts of heat. According to Laser Power Systems CEO, Charles Stevens, just one gram of thorium produces more energy than 28,000 litres of petrol.

Trading without money? Why a new system can address the economic spiral. Earlier this month the founder of firm Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard questioned the impact of greener business within an ever expanding economy.

Trading without money? Why a new system can address the economic spiral

"The elephant in the room is growth," he said. As an increase in gross domestic product (GDP) simply means more money changing hands, Chouinard is not alone in thinking it's a fairly inadequate measure of human progress. Politicians of most countries now agree new measures would be useful, and there is a growing community of professionals who seek to audit various aspects of our happiness and wellbeing. When colleagues enthuse about new measures of progress, I can't help but wonder why for the past 20 years an alternative measure of progress has had such little impact on public policy or corporate strategy. The Human Development Index (HDI) is backed by the United Nations and measures life expectancy, education, and income. While more politicians promote new measures of progress, they remain fixated on increasing economic growth. Nikola Danaylov at TZM Interviews. A Scientific Description of God. Words are only as good as their definitions.

A Scientific Description of God

Faulty definitions will inherently lead to faulty understandings and vice versa. This is especially true when a word and its definition are contentious. There is no word in any language which has been the subject of as much conflict, both in the realm of ideas and in the physical world as the word “god”. Metabunk. An Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments. A reader recently wrote in asking if I could share a bit about the process of putting the book together and talk about how the project started.

Certainly. Sam Seder vs. Libertarian Callers - The Rogan Board. The Rise of Fundamentalist Belief. A couple months ago, while the protests were raging here in Brazil, I spoke to a local friend about the demands of the protesters.

The Rise of Fundamentalist Belief

Aside from corruption, lack of infrastructure and poor education, it surprised me to hear that one of the chief complaints of thousands of the protesters had to do with homosexuality. He said that a large strain of Christian fundamentalism has arisen in Brazil in recent years and the federal government planned to officially label homosexuality a psychiatric disorder and provide funding for corrective “treatments,” — i.e., the infamous “gay camps” where they send LGBT kids to force them to become straight (Spoiler alert: the LGBT kids end up hanging themselves.)

I was surprised not only by the fact that the progressive social issue brought out young, educated Brazilians in droves, but the fact that the rural and religious political contingents of the country are becoming more conservative despite the country’s rapid economic development. Disruptive technology: is business investing enough in the future? To most of us, sustainability means meeting the needs of today's and subsequent generations through a much-improved relationship with nature.

Disruptive technology: is business investing enough in the future?

Modern sustainability began in the 1970s: most corporations were slow to make radical changes to their practices, because they would have needed to sacrifice profit to make environmental gains. After 2000, support from worldwide governments that provided tax incentives and developed a form of currency known as carbon credits encouraged more environmentally responsible forms of business and manufacturing. Working in concert with growing consumer demand for sustainable products and services, sustainability has become a fashionable term and a form of branding that is globally recognised. Today, it is hard to find a product, service or organisation that is not sustainable in some way or other. Businesses are making huge investments in sustainability because it is seen as a commercially viable option.

Incremental progress, not disruptive change.
