Five close reading strategies to support the Common Core I walked in to my first college class, Political Science 101, eager to learn. For my inaugural college assignment, my professor asked the class to read the first three chapters of the textbook for the next class period. That night, I returned to my dorm room, determined to learn everything I could in those three chapters. I pulled out my textbook and highlighter. However, when I opened my textbook it was unlike anything I had read in high school. I shrugged, pulled out my highlighter and started highlighting. I quickly realized that I had no real game plan for reading this complicated textbook. Flash forward to my first few years of teaching. While this method may have been slightly more effective than what I used that first day of college, it was still too vague and ambiguous for my students. The Best Assessment Tools for the Online Classroom This article will discuss some practical methods, which have been empirically tested and experimented both in the classroom and in "distance" delivery. New methods, which are either low cost or no cost for the instructor or end-user, will also be discussed. Some of these are already known as Web 2.0 tools, but had never been incorporated in the assessment of student e-documents. The first product I will discuss is Dragon Naturally Speaking 11.5 (now 12.0) , which takes voice and moves it into text. Search Engines Tips for Using Search Engines When you are unable to find the information you need on any of the recommended web sites, it is always possible to do your own search using one of the popular search engines. No two search engines index the web in exactly the same way, so it is important to try several before abandoning your search. The main guidelines for conducting a successful search are: (1) begin with a simple search and then progressively narrow your search by adding additional terms; (2) enter your rarest and most important search terms before more common words; (3) use phrases or proper names, enclosing them in quotes if necessary; (4) try alternative words or phrases that refer to the same topic; (5) use the plus (+) sign to indicate words that must appear in each page found; (6) click the Help or Search Tips or Advanced Search link to learn about the special features of each search engine.
