The Culture of Curating and The Curating of Culture(s)

Over the last twenty-five years, as international group exhibitions and biennials became the dominant mode of presenting contemporary art to the public, curatorship began to be perceived as a constellation of creative activities not unlike artistic praxis. The curator went from being a behind-the-scenes organizer and selector to a visible, centrally important cultural producer. In The Culture of Curating and the Curating of Culture(s), Paul O’Neill examines the emergence of independent curatorship and the discourse that helped to establish it. Archive

It contains material (catalogues, articles, videos, CD’s, images and web sites) in relation to the practice of over 100 international curators, artist curators, new-media curators and curatorial collaborations. Archives have become an increasingly common practice in the art world since the 1960s. On the one hand, there are archives founded by artists or collectors; on the other, a more recent development, there are those founded by curators, who sought to make their collections of materials accessible and make their selection criteria public.

That desire may have arisen from the dissolution of the notion of the self-contained artwork, which has been eclipsed by a contingent art object that makes a new form of cultural memory necessary and always contains a note of protest and a critique of museum practices. She founded and was the Director of P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center from 1976–2008 and is one of the originators of the alternative space movement.[1] Heiss has curated and/or organized over 700 exhibitions at P.S.1 and elsewhere.[2] Early life and education[edit] Heiss was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and raised in a farming community in Jacksonville, Illinois. The daughter of teachers, she graduated with a B.A. from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, which she attended on a scholarship from the Lawrence Conservatory of Music.[3] P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center[edit] In June 1976, Heiss curated "Rooms," the inaugural exhibit in what is now known as P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City, Queens.

Life Always Escapes

—Hannah Arendt, The Human Condition1 1. Life Always Escapes2 One way of addressing the question of how to live together is through what we may or may not have in common. The Commons at first appear like an oddity: flat and rather nondescript expanses of grass and trees, urban parks that are not tended too well, with some occasional flowers or beds of ornamental plants. To hear similar sentiments invoked by a Leveller in 1649 can provide some comfort against the solitude of asking very similar questions today.3 Another motivation for reviving and acting from a discourse that may have originated over 400 years ago is best explained by Avery Gordon in her conversation with Natascha Sadr Haghighian, in which she quotes Christopher Hill:

Global Art and the Museum.
