THE Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) is pushing for commercial production of rubber tree in Eastern Visayas as an alternative for coconut and abaca -- two major farm products affected by unstable price and diseases.

SLSU president Gloria Reyes said rubber trees thrive in many Southern Leyte areas and it might be suitable in Samar and in other parts of Leyte. Reyes said a six-hectare plantation established by a farmer in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte has encouraged them to push for rubber bud wood garden, on-station adaptability trial, on-farm technology demonstrations, and capability building and enhancement.

The SLSU has established a half-hectare bud wood garden in San Juan, Southern Leyte campus. It will produce 50,000 seedlings for distribution to farmers across the province. A hectare of bud wood garden can supply the planting materials needed of about 300 hectares of rubber plantation.
