Internet of Things - Architecture — IOT-A: Internet of Things Architecture. The Architectural Reference Model (ARM), presented in this book by the members of the IoT-A project team makes it possible to connect vertically closed systems, architectures and application areas so as to create open interoperable systems and integrated environments and platforms.

It constitutes a foundation from which software companies can capitalize on the benefits of developing consumer-oriented platforms including hardware, software and services. The material is structured in two parts. Part A introduces the general concepts developed for and applied in the ARM. It is aimed at end users who want to use IoT technologies, managers interested in understanding the opportunities generated by these novel technologies, and system architects who are interested in an overview of the underlying basic models.

The giant companies are touting the creation of the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) as a major development--but as GigaOM notes, AT&T, GE, Cisco and Intel announced a partnership last fall, and IBM has been pushing its MQTT standard since last April. His Internet of Things (IoT) is a system where the Internet is connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors. And sensors can be any device that gathers data and reports that data to a data collection facility such as a data warehouse, a database, or log server. IoT isn't just a fancy buzzword that describes how your refrigerator can let you know when you need to replace your spoiling milk or your rotting vegetables (although it can), it is so much more. How much more is only left to your imagination and to your budget. You can do as little or as much with IoT as you want. Consortium wants to standardize Internet of Things. AT&T, Cisco, GE, IBM and Intel announced Thursday the formation of the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), an open membership, not-for-profit group that will work to bring together the historically separated worlds of operational technology and information technology.

The IIC will work to identify requirements for open interoperability standards and define common architectures to connect smart devices, machines, people, processes and data. Simply put, the IIC feels technologies ranging from simple soda machines to high-powered wind turbines could be made better by being made smarter and more connected, right out of the box. During a conference call Ton Steenman, vice president of the IoT Solutions Group at Intel, said the IIC is a major step forward to drive interoperability and standardization for the Internet of Things.

When we started our initial research back in 2012, it was quite a challenge to find data on the number of connected devices out there. The market was uncertain not only about what a connected device is, but also whether smartphones, TVs, and tablets connected to the web also count as connected devices. Furthermore, the process of recasting M2M to better suit the IoT was still in its infancy (as was discussion of the difference between M2M-connected and IoT-connected devices). Given that there were so few central databases to refer to, we triangulated 15+ sources. Connected devices by 2022 When we continued our research in 2014, however, it had become much easier to access data on connected devices, as analyst firms such as Machina Research are increasingly staying abreast of IoT developments.
