Alan Turing, the Father of Computer Science

Alan Turing, the Father of Computer Science
(The title references Shanley Kane's post by the same name. This post represents my views on what men can do.) It's no secret that programming is an incredibly male dominated field. Figures vary, but somewhere from 20% to 29% of currently working programmers are female.Less than 12% of Computer Science bachelor's degrees were awarded to women at US PhD-granting institutions in 2010. So, on average, only about 1 out of every 5 working programmers you'll encounter will be female. You could say technology has a man problem.

Turing machine An artistic representation of a Turing machine (Rules table not represented) A Turing machine is a hypothetical device that manipulates symbols on a strip of tape according to a table of rules. Despite its simplicity, a Turing machine can be adapted to simulate the logic of any computer algorithm, and is particularly useful in explaining the functions of a CPU inside a computer. The "Turing" machine was invented in 1936 by Alan Turing[1] who called it an "a-machine" (automatic machine). The Turing machine is not intended as practical computing technology, but rather as a hypothetical device representing a computing machine. Turing machines help computer scientists understand the limits of mechanical computation.
