Social Media/Memes

Facebook Twitter

Nowadays, social media has become a tremendously varied and contentious platform for people to express their views on issues such as women's and LGBTQ+ rights.

Most of the time, we are educated about things that aren't necessarily accurate, and these misleading allegations or assertions may be quite harmful to their audience. You may be wondering why this is the case. While memes and social media may sometimes provide beneficial and relevant information to society, this isn't always the case. It is fairly common to see sensitive issues used in memes in a humorous way when this is not appropriate. On social media there are a large group of people constantly posting and educating others on these relevant topics, in order to create awareness, but while those people are doing their best there are those who go find any possible way to turn the situation around. As we all know, social media is full of stereotypes about how individuals should act or be. A good example of this is the stereotype that was mentioned previously in the meme about how people believe the LGBTQ+ community to appear and act, which is not the truth. The image clearly shows that they are attempting to warn people that by labeling someone homosexual as an insult or simply as an adjective towards a person is ignorant and makes no sense. On the other hand, we have a news podcast about women in Saudi Arabia and how they are now being given more women's rights; this news podcast is unbiased since it not only discusses the good but also considers the bad side effects. This is an excellent example of how to use social media. To be educated and informed, rather than to belittle and ignore.
