50 Mind Blowing Sketches | Penny's Daybook | www.PennysDaybook.com

http://www.pennysdaybook.com/2010/04/50-mind-blowing-sketches/ Critic, “I’m an artist myself and” Argument from authority – always a logical fallacy, but even worse when it’s in a subjective field where there arguably can’t be any authorities. “I hate it when people who aren’t artists assume anything someone puts out there is ‘mind-blowing’.” – incredibly condescending, don’t you think? And besides, “assumes” that it is mind-blowing? If the person who posted these pieces had his mind figuratively blown by them, then how can they not be mind-blowing? Who are you to say that they are not, in the face of reality and facts?

Few things are more important on a wedding day (apart from both partners turning up; the ring being secure; and nobody objecting during the ceremony) than the cake. Very few weddings are without such a centrepiece. It's just a shame that so many couples opt for the same traditional, boring designs when there is so much opportunity to impress and surprise the guests. Here are 30 brilliant examples, to be used as inspiration for your own big day. http://www.freedating.co.uk/articles/worlds-greatest-wedding-cakes.html

Sculptures Popping Out of Paintings - My Modern Metropolis

http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/sculptures-popping-out-of Oh, to have been in Tokyo in June! Shintaro Ohata just finished up a solo exhibition at the Yukari Art Contemprary in Tokyo, Japan. This Hiroshima, Japan-born artist is known for his ability to show us everyday life in a cinematic way. He captures light in his paintings, showering the world, as we know it, with carefully placed strokes of it. "Every ordinary scenery in our daily lives, such as the rising sun, the beauty of a sunset or a glittering road paved with asphalt on a rainy night, becomes something irreplaceable if we think we wouldn’t be able to see them anymore," he told Yukari gallery . "I am creating works to capture lights in our everyday life and record them in the painting.”

I'm a big fan of rock balancing, the art of positioning rocks, both large and small, in such a way that they bend the perception of what's possible. A well-balanced stack of stones is as unique as any snowflake and requires an almost-mystical understanding of placement and weight on the part of the artist. Boing Boing writer Mark Frauenfelder found this video of stone artist Mike Grab at work balancing stones in Boulder, Colo.'s Boulder Creek after he saw Grab's work while picnicking nearby. Check out the artist at work. Another artist, Scott Hocking , also works in stone but at a different angle.

This time we’re gonna show you some truly inspiring works with text, also referred to as typography. This can be used many places; in magazines, advertisements, websites, logos and more. These great pieces will show you that there are no boundaries and that you can make almost anything with text if you have a good portion of creativity and talent. Typography can in todays terms be so much more than what you find in a book or magazine. It’s turned into a very inspiring form of art, and there are many great pieces out there. Many times they can be mixed with either other graphical elements or some sort of poem or saying.

(click images for detail) For the better part of three decades multidisciplinary artist Guy Laramee has worked as a stage writer, director, composer, a fabricator of musical instruments, a singer, sculptor, painter and writer. Among his sculptural works are two incredible series of carved book landscapes and structures entitled Biblios and The Great Wall , where the dense pages of old books are excavated to reveal serene mountains, plateaus, and ancient structures. Of these works he says: So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint Romantic landscapes. Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains.
