DJ Omar Khan and Baby Mia Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games There’s not a lot of new releases this week, largely because no one wants to take on the “mockingjays.” Everywhere is Hunger Games madness! The other two films opening are The Raid: Redemption, and The Deep Blue Sea.

The Big Pink have confirmed a series of new shows this summer in North America. Ahead of those dates, the band has put together a five song remix EP titled Future This – Remixes . Among those assisting in the reworking of the tracks are Forest Swords, AraabmuziK, King Krule, and d’Eon. You can download the EP below from the embedded widget.
Everyone meet Divine Fits , the hopefully glorious union of Britt Daniel from Spoon, New Bomb Turks’ Sam Brown, and Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade. No music is available to determine whether or not it’s any good, but with that lineup, I have high hopes.

largehearted boy: a music and literature blog

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Previous contributors include Bret Easton Ellis , Kate Christensen , Kevin Brockmeier , George Pelecanos , Dana Spiotta , Amy Bloom , David Peace , Myla Goldberg , and many others. Matthew Gavin's Pot Farm cleverly weaves his own story of escape with that of a California medical marijuana farm populated by a cast of colorful characters. http://blog.largeheartedboy.com/

Martyrs are not victims. There is no self-pity or cool detachment to their pain. This is the mantra by which Erika M. Anderson lives in her songs. Past Life Martyred Saints is an intimate but uncomfortable album, it will make you feel guilty for the hearts you’ve torn apart and it will make you feel weak for all the times you’ve been hurt and felt victimized for it.

Muzzle of Bees

http://www.muzzleofbees.com/ Words: Steven Spoerl | Photo: Dan Huiting It was Monday night, December 12th. The excitement was more than palpable. A banner was strewn over the doors announcing a town’s pride of their homecoming hero and his achievements. Doors weren’t set to open until 7pm but a line was already forming at noon. This is an unusual scene for Eau Claire but then again, this was a special show.
GQ’s Steve Albini interview , published online just yesterday, has already stirred a ridiculous debate amongst music fans and critics. Albini is, of course, notoriously cranky about the “mainstream” and major labels–and to a large degree, rightfully so. But in the GQ piece he used Sonic Youth’s 1990 signing with DGC as the epitome of artistic irresponsibility. And as we’re aware, on the internet this sort of beef will inevitably get people talking. I’ve been thinking about this sort of debate a lot over the past couple years, and I thought I’d share some thoughts on Sonic Youth’s 1980s and 1990s label existence, because I think it sheds some light on the ever-slippery nature of “indie” and “major” that Albini–ever the ideologue–likes to handily present as black-and-white. http://www.marathonpacks.com/

If you were paying attention, Roc Marciano owned the month of May. He’s one of the few artists whose guest appearances are completely consistent with his solo material. Random-as-fuck collaborations with British producer Purist, NY artifact Wais P, and Shinobi Stalin (seriously, who the fuck?) all would have made fine Marcberg bonus tracks. “Put Jewels On It” is a career highlight for Statik Selektah and “Granite” sounds like vintage Mobb Deep. It’s like these guys know they have to bring their A-game when Roc acquiesces to a feature.

Stop the presses! Stop those presses, sez I!!! EM-EFFING STOP THEM RIGHT GODDAMNED NOW!!! [Breathless, air-sucking pause.] Enormous, shocking news has been unearthed by DF’s tireless journalistic efforts: You may have heard of an obscure book and a related, low-budget indie film called “The Hunger Games.”
Well, lookie what we have here. Correatown and Daniel Ahearn & The Jones are releasing a new split 7" on Tuesday and we've been given the "oh soooo" difficult task of presenting the show that will likely make that little gathering in Project X look like a tea party. Not only are Angela Correa, Daniel Ahearn, and Mindy Jones three of L.A.'s most revered/respected/re-dorable artists in town but they're also three of our most beloved friends of the scene. In the many years we've known them, we've never heard one bad song in their repertoire and this 7" is no exception -- in fact, they could very well be two of their best. Correatown's "Meridians" is by far her most melodically explosive song since she transitioned from a solo singer-songwriter to a guitar-rock band.
