This shouldn’t surprise us for Shakespeare was not an historian (as often believed) but a playwright – a writer of dramatic and comedic tales, often based around real historical figures. The name MacBeth conjures up pictures of three old crones dancing around a cauldron of Devil’s brew, and of Lady MacBeth, regal and ruthless, urging her reluctant spouse to murder the aged and saintly Duncan. The Story of MacBeth is, historically if not artistically, much more interesting than Shakespeare’s myth. After Malcolm’s death he was succeeded, in accordance with the new rules of succession which he introduced, (primogeniture, which replaced tanistry) by a direct descendant, his grandson Duncan.

He murdered the king, usurped the Scottish throne, had his best friend assassinated, and was killed by Macduff at Dunsinane. Then there's some stuff about witches and a conniving wife-- Shakespeare was a skillful dramatist, but how much of the story is true, and how much myth? I had no idea until stumbled across an entry on Macbeth in a reliable reference book. It said he ruled Scotland for 17 years and was probably a very good king. What's this? I began my research with several books on Scottish history from the University of Arizona library, assuming such scholarly works would spell out the story for me. WHAT REASONABLE ASSUMPTIONS CAN WE MAKE?

Shakespeare and others have certainly done him a disservice, for in reality Macbeth seems to have been a good king. By his succession, Duncan's sons fled in 1042: Malcolm to Cumbria, which he probably regarded as his birthright just as the princes of Alba; and Donald to the Western Isles. Macbeth mac Findlaech. As an 11th century Scottish king, his reign was relatively long at 17 years, but his achievements and deeds have been tarnished by the pen of the greatest of all English playwrights, William Shakespeare, in his ‘Scottish Play’. Admirers of Richard III (1483-85) of England know only too well what impact the pen of Shakespeare had on transforming historical fact. Yet it is with Macbeth, and all the theatrical superstitions that now accompany the play, that the Scottish king’s reputation has been rewritten, despite the efforts of historians to convince people otherwise. But who was Macbeth? His full name was Mac Bethad mac Findlaich and he was born in what is now Dingwall in 1005. These were violent times. Historians have read much into this journey. A Mormaer was literally a High Steward of one of the ancient Celtic provinces of Scotland, but in Latin documents the word is usually translated as 'Comes', which means Earl. Shakespeare's famous tragedy Macbeth is based upon his life, but is not historically accurate. In the play, Macbeth and his wife murder the aged King Duncan when he comes to visit them in their castle. In reality, Macbeth killed Duncan, who was about 39, in battle, and made himself king instead. Macbeth's marriage to Kenneth III's granddaughter Gruoch strengthened his claim to the throne. He was king of Moray and became king of the Scots when Duncan was killed in 1040. Duncan’s father Crinan was killed at Dunkeld in1045. Macbeth married Guroch (Lady Macbeth) granddaughter of Malcolm II who had a son Lulach by her previous marriage. Macbeth was immortalised in the play by William Shakespeare although the play is historically inaccurate.
