An invitation to the fairies: DIY Fairy Door - Danya Banya

Great way to encourage outdoor imaginative play. My four year old daughter JJ’s been obsessed with listening to Rainbow Magic fairy books for months and months now, and roleplaying with fairy figurines is one of her favourite games to play. She and I often see evidence of fairies in our day to day lives – a wildflower blooming, a mushroom growing or the sparkles of dew. But she recently made a tentative comment about how fairies aren’t really “real”. You can tell she wants to believe, but is just not quite sure. This DIY fairy door took only a couple of minutes to make. Lottie and Pop Book Launch! - Children's Books Daily...

Lots of people contact me about their text for a book, and I almost never have time to do anything but reply and say, ‘I’m really sorry, I’m not taking any more books for review at the moment’. Sad as this is, I have two book piles as tall as I am next to our bed which are children’s and YA books which I have read and LOVED and am going to review (if they don’t topple and squash me first). This blogging caper is my me-time, this little blog is my place to escape to and the place where my thoughts around children’s and YA literature, which fizz and pop 24 hours a day, are emptied onto the page/screen/interwebs. Inspired by a Book: Fairies, Fashion, Flowers, Gardens - Children's Books Daily... I do so love it when I find PudStar doing something that has been inspired by a book: happy parent/teacher/librarian moment!

Much better than when I find her with a Sharpie pen. ‘Fairie-ality: The Fashion Collection from the House of Ellwand’ is a book I purchased for myself several years ago. It is a fashion collection for fairies. A visually stunning and gorgeous coffee table book for those into fairies and/or fashion! You can see some of the fashion collection here and the image below is from the ‘Vintage’ collection here. When I first purchased it I spent weeks pouring over the pictures, and when PudStar found it on the shelves she did the same. Anyway she’s not looked at it for a year or so, but the other day I found her sticking fallen agapanthus flowers to paper and drawing fairies around them. I love the agapanthus in my garden. I love that I have some of my grandads plants in my garden, and if we ever move some of the agapanthus, stags and elks are coming with me. Make a Magic Door. Imagination and Creativity. There are a number of free books for you to read this week on the topic, and one of them, “Doors in the Air,” inspired this fun activity.

Twig Chair Tutorial. Aren’t these cute?

Twig Chair Tutorial

Am I allowed to say that about my own work? I was so thrilled with how they turned out, and how really simple they are to make that I had to photograph the construction of one so that everyone else could have fun making them too. To build these you need some basic supplies, a handful of twigs, pruning shears or other clippers or saws, and a glue gun. It would be nice to make these without glue, I bet they would be really nice with some lashing, but the glue gun makes it so fast! I made six chairs in under an hour, which, given how long it takes me to make most things, is pretty darn fast. So. Line up the four twigs for the seat, and cut two more twigs that are one twig width longer than the seat depth. Now for the front legs. Stick those front legs on. Flip the chair right side up and measure how long you want your back leg/chair back twigs to be and cut two of them.

Here is the first back leg in position. And you are done! Next up, we make fairy gardens.
