Le 6 septembre 2000, sous l’égide des Nations unies, 189 chefs d’Etat signaient la Déclaration du Millénaire . Un programme sur quinze ans où tous les pays membres de l’ONU promettent de réduire de manière conséquente l’extrême pauvreté, la faim, le Sida et le paludisme, l’analphabétisme, la dégradation de l’environnement et la discrimination à l’encontre des femmes… Afin de faire connaître le programme autour des 8 objectifs du millénaire, 8 grands réalisateurs (Jane Campion, Mira Nair, Wim Wenders, Gus Van Sant, Gaspard Noé, Jan Kounen, Abderhamane Sissako, Gael Garcia Bernal) ont eu carte blanche pour réaliser un court métrage et nous offrir leur vision du monde d'aujourd'hui.
