Why have nationalists ici so often ignored anglophones? Columnist Toula Drimonis and I were on C’est pas trop tôt on ICI Radio-Canada Première Monday morning chatting with host Marie-France Bazzo about how anglos were feeling during this election campaign and we had a great talk about a wide range of issues.
But maybe the most interesting thing was our discussion of nationalism and anglophones. I was saying that I’ve been wondering for a while why the Parti Québécois has never – at least not since the early days of René Lévesque – made the slightest effort to bring anglophones into their project for an independent country. Why is that? Why would some progressive anglophones not be supportive of the notion of creating our own nation ici, one that would put francos, anglos and allos on equal footing. Peut-être dans un système électoral à deux tours, mais certainement pas avec le mode de scrutin qu’on a aujourd’hui. » Dans une lettre ouverte publiée dans Le Devoir mardi, M. Curzi proposait de créer une alliance électorale entre les souverainistes de la scène provinciale, seule façon selon lui d’empêcher une division du vote francophone qui profite au Parti libéral du Québec.
