In times of struggle, art has a way of breaking through. And recently, several of the dancers of the acclaimed Alvin Ailey American Dance Company decided to come together and get free. After 30 years, Bangarra's Stephen Page looks back in pride. Since Stamping Ground premiered in 1983 the work has been staged in many countries, not only by Kylián but also by his repetiteur, Roslyn Anderson, a former dancer at both the Australian Ballet and the Netherlands Dance Company who sat alongside Kylián as he created The Stamping Ground in The Hague.
Anderson, now in Sydney to stage the work for Bangarra, remembers how Kylián returned from Groote Eylandt with “such a powerful impression and every piece he choreographed since then has been inspired by what he saw when he was there. He was still exploring his choreography and his humour and he was absolutely not trying to emulate or copy what he saw.
