The Population Biology of Isle Royale Wolves and Moose: An Overview

Five decades of wolf-moose dynamics The wolves and moose of Isle Royale have been studied for more than five decades. This research represents the longest continuous study of any predator-prey system in the world. The most important events in the chronology have been essentially unpredictable. Climate Discovery Teacher's Guide

This teacher's guide was produced by the National Center for Atmospheric Research as a companion to the Climate Discovery exhibit at our Boulder, Colorado laboratory. Each unit contains lessons appropriate for grades 5-9 on a variety of Earth system science topics that facilitate student learning about our planet's climate system. The lessons in each unit can be viewed using Adobe Acrobat Reader and may be reproduced for educational use.

Global Warming Explained, In About A Minute : 13.7: Cosmos And Culture. Jean-Pierre Clatot/AFP/Getty Images On a pleasant day in 2011, researchers roamed San Diego's public parks in search of volunteers to fill out anonymous surveys about global warming.

Global Warming Explained, In About A Minute : 13.7: Cosmos And Culture

In the end about 270 responses were collected from a mix of park visitors and nearby community college students. The researchers wanted to know how well the average American understands the basic processes responsible for global warming, and whether there's a relationship between this basic understanding and the belief that global warming is actually occurring. The results were sobering. While a majority of volunteers believed that global warming is a reality (80 percent) and that human activities are a significant contributing factor (77 percent), only a slim minority was able to explain even rudimentary aspects of the mechanism. Which Nations Consume the Most Water? A vast amount of water is used to produce the food and products that nations consume.

Which Nations Consume the Most Water?

Large population is the greatest factor, but inefficient agriculture or dependence on water-intensive cuisine can exacerbate demand; meat consumption accounts for 30 percent of the U.S. water footprint. Certain countries, such as India and the U.S., also export significant quantities of water in the form of food and products, despite their own robust consumption. Populous nations that have little land or little water are huge net importers. Those insights come from engineers Arjen Y. 2010 Census Interactive Population Map.

A Terrifying, Fascinating Timelapse of 30 Years of Human Impact on Earth - Emily Badger

Since the 1970s, NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey have been amassing satellite images of every inch of our planet as part of the Landsat program. Over time, the images reveal a record of change: of cities expanding, lakes and forests disappearing, new islands emerging from the sea off the coast of rising Middle East metropolises like Dubai. If you could thumb through these historic pictures as if in a flip book, they would show stunning change across the earth's surface, in both our natural environments and our man-made ones.
