Fighting Ebola. Ebola is a global crisis that affects us all.

Fighting Ebola

Whether you've been casually following the outbreak from afar or you're on the front-lines fighting the disease, your perspective matters. About This Challenge Faced with the escalating Ebola epidemic and the need for a coordinated global response, USAID and partners have seen a clear urgency for innovative ideas to improve healthcare delivery and restrict the spread of the disease. On September 26th, 2014, President Obama announced this need and called upon everyone, together, to design the next solution. In response to this crisis, USAID and partners have launched Fighting Ebola: A Grand Challenge for Development to help healthcare workers on the front lines provide better care and stop the spread of Ebola. You don’t have to be an expert in healthcare or infectious disease to contribute your insights and ideas – in fact, some of the brightest solutions may be found in the most unthinkable corners.

How it works How you can help. Grand Challenges Canada. What does it take for a nation to become prosperous?

Grand Challenges Canada

There are really only two primary sources of prosperity: material resources found in the ground and ideas found in peoples’ heads. In what we call ‘developed’ nations, it is widely agreed that mining ideas and turning them into goods and services that people value – a process called innovation – is key to stimulating economic growth, creating jobs and fostering prosperity. If innovation is key to securing prosperity in ‘developed’ nations, why would the same approach not make sense for developing nations? Innovation is a term used so widely these days that it can become easy to overlook the powerful and important concept that lies at its centre: to harness good ideas to overcome established problems in ways that are better, easier and less costly.

Social Impact Bonds: Lessons from the Field. In piloting social impact bonds, governments have already yielded some lessons from the field.

Social Impact Bonds: Lessons from the Field

A year after the British Ministry of Justice piloted social impact bonds to reduce the 60 percent recidivism rate for the 3,000 criminal offenders who passed through the doors of a private prison in Peterborough, UK, the innovative funding mechanism captured the imagination of many social entrepreneurs. These bonds, also known as pay-for-success contracts, promise to transform the relationship between governments, nonprofits, and funders. “Social impact bonds” became one of the top ten buzzwords of 2011.
